Custom search engines trigger

  • Is it possible to change the trigger for custom seach engines? I have i for imdb and a for amazon, but since they are triggered by space, a search like "i need stuff" or "a dumb thing" take me to imdb or amazon instead of default search engine. Chrome had tab as trigger so I didn’t have this problem.

  • @yusernamelol You can change the "trigger" (Nickname) of a search engine in Settings > Search. You can also remove a search engine if it causes you problems.

  • No, I meant the trigger as the key which confirms the search, default is [space]. I designated the nicknames I like, I just want to start the search with [tab] for example and not with [space] as it is now. Now if I want to search "a [space] new [space] hope" it would take me to amazon search for "new hope" instead of google for "a new hope".

  • @yusernamelol It isn’t possible and this is indeed annoying in some circumstances. The way to circumvent this is inputting the nickname for your default search in this instance. <nickname default engine><space>a new hope

  • @yusernamelol I'm still struggling to understand exactly what you mean. Are you saying in Chrome if you press TAB this will trigger a search in the default search engine? The usual behaviour in other browsers of pressing TAB in the address bar would be to change input focus to the next UI element, for instance the search field or page.

Chrome is broken in so many ways, but this is a new one 😂

I don't really see the problem with just starting a search with a space instead. I understand you've gotten used to the (weird) way it was in Chrome but can't really blame Vivaldi for doing the sensible thing here...

  • @Pathduck No, when using the default search another search triggers when using search terms that start out with the nickname for another search.

Yes, that part I understand. Workaround are perfectly fine in my opinion.

    1. Prepend search string with a space.
    2. Use search nickname.
    3. Send a full string like "a new hope" or just prepend search with ".

It's the part about using TAB I don't understand, and how it's meant to work in Chrome.

  • @Pathduck If I understand correctly, Chrome just doesn’t switch the search engine accidentally coz you have to type the nickname and press Tab (instead of space) to switch the engine.

Right, ok. Still sounds broken/bonkers to me 😂

  • @Pathduck I didn’t know it was a thing either, it’s been at least 7 or 8 years since I last used Chrome.

  • @Pathduck I had to look into this functionality to try and figure out this post.

Chrome lets you automatically create search engines in the address bar by typing the url and then hitting tab. Although, I seem to have just broken this on my Chrome install by deleting some search engines.

    For example:
If you type youtube.com and then hit Tab, it will create a search engine nickname of youtube.com and allow you to search on YouTube. Then you can go into settings and change the nickname to something easier.

The Tab is just needed for creating the new search engine, but Tab or Space both work after that.

So, technically this would be a problem in Chrome too if a user set up a search engine nickname to something easy like a for amazon.com. Typing "a new hope" or "a + Tab + new hope" would both search Amazon for "new hope".

  • I see it has changed in Chrome since I’ve used it, now a space triggers the nickname as well. But Chrome lets me choose between the nicknamed search and a standard search with a tab.

Is it possible in V? Right now I only get nicknamed search, a list of bookmarks and history urls. If I could tab to google search, that would be great.

  • @yusernamelol Quick commands work like this. The address field, unfortunately, not.

  • @potmeklecbohdan I see quick commands indeed gives a dropdown including the default search engine, but I can’t tab through the choices there 🤦♂
