I think the reason you aren't getting an answer is because there is no setting for this, and the code for selecting new tab is obscure. Someone DID, months ago, post code to change Speed Dial to some other kind of extension (Speed dial is an extension, technically, not a page) but I have no idea where I would find that. It might have even been changing the hex key in the "home page" link on the address bar to the hash for an installed Speed Dial extension.

Actually i tried every possible method i could find and they all did work atleast 50 to 60 %
and only one i like the most isvivaldi://newtab
it is simple and short
but to get the extension based tabpge you have to manually type this```
vivaldi://newtabThe only thing i could not seem to find is how to get this thing work automatically i have some theories that could work but they are really long process and i dont want to touch that long process

Ok, this is an old thread, but was first when I searched for the newtab extension problem.
My problem was related and I though I'll still post a kinda of a solution here, more like getting around the problem with a bug.
So currently (in 1.7.735.36 snapshot build), if you install a newtab chrome extension it will not replace the Start Page by default.
You can navigate to
vivaldi://newtab
, which actually displays the extension you use, great. But if you typevivaldi://newtab
into the New Tab Page setting it displays chrome's default newtab, kinda weird.Getting around the problem for now if you instead set
chrome://newtab
as the New Tab Page, which redirects tovivaldi://newtab
but now its the same as manually navigating here and the installed extension also works. Not sure what's the intended behavior in Vivaldi, if defaul Start Page should be replaced, but at least I'm guessing it's a bug that
vivaldi://newtab
doesn't use the extension if directly placed in the New Tab Page setting. I'm hoping Vivaldi doesn't want to force the default Start Page on it's users.ps.: I didn't try to use a newtab extension until now, so don't know if the whole thing is just a bug/regression.

@dLeon Thanks, I thought I did, maybe the "newtab" keyword (as one word) messed it up and made this post more relevant or maybe I didn't change it to latest posts, I actually realized the chrome://newtab "trick" while coming here for help.
I'm switching to a newtab extension cause I realized I rarely use the actual dials, especially the dial tabs/folders. I'm using bookmarks bar too, so to go to frequently used sites, that suffice too.
I'm in the middle of picking an extension, but I'll use limitless for a few days, not sure if I'll actually stick with it or not though.

@dLeon Yeah, I just posted the workaround I found.
I though of opening a ticket for it too, but if it came up multiple times already, then it's better that I didn't. -
