Lazy loading
-
In the latest snapshot (or maybe one before that), it seems that lazy tabs have been introduced to Vivaldi. When I open the browser, tabs don't load until I click on them. I don't like this behavior, and have asked about it in the past. I now understand that some people like this, but I do not. Is there an option to load tabs in the background? If not, can we get one?
-
I'm sure the option will be offered. It's slower to open and more memory hungry that way, but I'm sure the devs will let people have that in time, if that's what an individual wants.
-
I hope an option will come in some future release.
I've been playing around with it a bit, and this looks like something that only occurs on startup. Opening a link in a background tab appears to load immediately.

I've also seen tabs that lay LONG dormant during a session get unloaded.

In my case, adding mail might actually reduce the memory profile, because I always have at least one mail client open all the time, and that client is not only running an engine and checking accounts, it is also displaying its own UI. So, bundled, I might use a bit less RAM and CPU cycles.
On the other hand, if one never USES the email client, it won't use any memory or CPU cycles at all. It will only increase the download size of the program somewhat.

I don't want to create a new thread on the exactly same issue, so hopefully it's OK to kinda resurrect this one…
Is there any news on this? It's been bugging me for a while now. I know plenty of people prefer lazy tab loading, but I'm the exact opposite - I don't mind long startup of the browser, but I want all of my tabs to be available when I click on them, not a while later.
So is there any possibility to disable the lazy tab loading yet? I've been looking really hard, but didn't find anything, but perhaps I missed something... And if there is not, is there at least an option coming soon-ish?

Really? Only yesterday I asked 2 university colleagues to try out Vivaldi (their're still on O12.17), and after half an hour they came to my office and told me that tab switching is so painfully slow that they stopped testing it.
The reason is of course that the content has to loaded from scratch, not actually tab switching.TBH, I absolutey hate lazy loading as well, and really hope to see it optional sooner than later…

I'm attempting to switch over from Opera (long time Opera user, but disliked a lot of the missing features in 15+) to Vivaldi as it seems to be getting more stable. This enforced lazy loading is driving me nuts. I have fast internet and a fast pc, I don't want lazy loading on. This is an option in Opera, I don't see why it's not in Vivaldi.

That can be changed via Automatic tab discarding in Vivaldi://flags

Chromium is supposed to have an option that says "Don't load tabs until selected" and if you uncheck that, it will fix this problem….
But I can't find the setting no matter how hard I search..... :S
Did the vivaldi devs remove that option?? -
I noticed another small thing: the adblock seems to slow page loading (it hooks and disable prefetch/preload chromium setting).
I noticed as I recently refreshed the profile, and I'm testing with another adblocker, adguard (Ublock Origin rarely failed to work well, and adblock plus… well.. use too ram, even for me xD).
Personally, I prefer the "load all opened tabs at the same time", but also an option to "load only when active" should be present.
However this pc is "too fast" to notice most of the slowdowns, I've to try also with an "old" dual core laptop I've -
1.0 is upon us and this blight is still here, with no solution in sight… sigh. Are they trying to be as stubborn/dismissive as Opera?
For crying out loud, It's bad enough that I have to manually refresh every single tab on startup (because reasons?!) but also having to click on them to make them even load whatever was cached?
How is this a good thing for power users?!

That doesn't fix it

I've also been looking for a solution to this problem. Hopefully it'll soon be fixed - I totally agree that this is quite bad for power users.

So still no way to disable this? I mean, it's not a dealbreaker for me, but it would still be nice to have an option.

Hi!
It has been a very nice experience so far with Vivaldi (came and went a couple times throught the beta), but you really need to address this issue.
I really appreciate the effort made to improving the experience of those with limited resources (either PCs or broadbands) but I have a beast of a connection (300Mbps DW/UP) and a beast of a PC (i7, 16GB RAM,…). I would bet many are in a similar situation.
Since it's chromium's default to load background tabs (and please correct me if something has changed and I'm wrong), I really believe it wouldn't that hard to implement a switch for turning this option on. There is already extreme customizability.
Btw, just joined the forums to create this topic, awesome community from what it'm seeing, hi everyone!
PS: I believe something similar would apply to this therad, but I'd rather post in just one topic:

Have Vivaldi devs even spoke about this? Any mentions? Anything?
This tab behavior annoys me to no end.

I pin tabs. But it doesn't bother me that they hibernate. I prefer it.
-
So that I can always go to the same place for them, without having to open a new tab or disturb my tab order, and so that I don't accidentally delete one. Of course, after I have used one, it tends to stay live, so that saves a second or two on future uses, but it's not a question of speed for me. It's a question of convenience.
