blocking tracking and ads is a good idea but now vivaldi is becoming increasingly unusable
-
I am using the latest version of V (checked today), on W7-64.
Since about 1.5-2 weeks ago content on some sites will not play in vivaldi.
eg.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2020-05-06/johns-hopkins-sees-long-ways-to-go-as-u-s-lifts-virus-restrictions-videoI have tried adjusting several settings, including disabling all extensions, but to no avail. So I tried to file a bug report from within the browser, but even the vivaldi bug report page
https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/
has "blocked content" (I don't know what) and so it will not function. -
@joss The Bloomberg video plays fine for me with tracking and ad-blocking enabled (the default)
I just submitted a bug report, so that page is also working for me.There will be many sites than no longer work properly unless you allow tracking and / or ads. That is good. Vivaldi is alerting you to potentially harmful sites.
See the Blog Article: Why We Introduced Ad-blocking
-
@joss , I also have no problems accessing with ad and tracking blocker activated. Nor on the mobile. But instead of deactivating the extensions, try accessing in a private window, only in this way you can discard the extensions, since some remain residents, although you deactivate them.
-
@Pesala
Even with Blocking Level set to "No Blocking", neither one works for me. -
@joss Have you blocked javascript? It happened to me on https://tapas.io where I previously blocked javascript to allow saving pictures with the context menu (which is blocked by a javascript rule) but then the site doesn't even displays pictures anymore without JS active.
For the record, the video at bloomberg you linked works for me. -
@iAN-CooG
I had the "Quick Javascript switcher" extension. However, for the bloomberg site, javascript was enabled. And to further test that that was not the problem, I disabled the extension (along with the rest of them).Just now, to test it further, I deleted that extension. Restarted vivaldi. And the Bberg site still does not work.
And in the vivaldi extension store, no matter what I type in, no extensions are found so I cannot reinstall it either! -
Something went really wrong with your installation of Vivaldi. Try with a guest/new profile. You can also try resetting your default profile.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
Indeed I concluded that this V installation was kaput.
So I took a new one, and it took me a couple of hours to move everything across including 7 extensions (all privacy related, it's amazing how you need to equip a browser to defend even a little bit of your privacy - same as in FF) and their settings. I didn't want to copy the whole user data/default folder across for fear of re-introducing the problem(s) from my previous installation.
I'm not against all advertising BTW, but rather the forceful involuntary tracking and fingerprinting.
Now the bberg video and the V bug report page appear correctly.Thanks again

@joss , in Vivaldi you don't need 7 privacy extensions to stay save. with the bbuild-in ad and tracking blocker or uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger it is enough.
Maybe you can ad Trace or CyDec, for anti fingerprint if you want to go completly safe, but these broke also some webs. If you want, use a good VPN (Nord, Express, Proton), but in the Desktop, not an extensión.
The best security tool is Common Sense. -
@jimfbk , not in Chrome Store, is a neural plug in, source code in experiences and books.

This one is unfortunately not resolved just yet on this end.
I have my shiny new vivaldi installation. And at first it appeared to work.
The vivaldi bug report page comes up properly now.However, the other example I gave, the bloomberg videos, only play intermittently. The first one usually plays, as some of you have also reported. Furthermore, if I click on other video titles on the right hand side of the tab, they play correctly in the same tab. But if I right-click and copy those URLs to a new tab, sometimes they play, sometimes they do not.
If I re-start vivaldi and begin by opening a page such as this one:
https://www.bloomberg.com/series/bloomberg-markets
and shift-click on a few videos so they open in new tabs in the background, then when I switch to those tabs sometimes they play, other times they do not.
Also, someone suggested opening a new private window. The response there is the same for me.Could someone else try this out, and see if they can replicate it?
Thanks

@jimfbk
Thanks for checking. I wonder if it has to do with playing a number of videos on this site in a row. As I have been starting from a clean install adding back extensions, re-implementing my settings one-by-one and then each time trying it again, possibly that has been too much. But normally a site would inform the user that the max number of articles/videos etc was reached, not just hang.Also, I just found out that when it does stop, using the extension "Clear Session" causes it to work again. This extension clears cookies, session and local storage from the current website.
So it might be that somewhere local storage is being gummed up. -
