V. started severely malfunctioning for me. scroll flicker, then blank tabs. Happened to anyone else?

  • Vivaldi started glitching severely for me yesterday evening. First, I started getting pages rapidly flickering between being visible and entirely black whenever I scrolled. (Also, some of the window UI, like the tab bars on open Vivaldi windows, was intermittently blacking out as well.) Wondering if that may have been related to having too many tabs open, I closed many tabs, and that problem ceased. A short while later, however (and I have no idea if this at all connected to the above), I noticed that I couldn't navigate to most new websites. Whether I typed in e.g. "http://news.google.com/" into the address bar and hit enter, or followed an external link from a page I was already on, the page would just go blank white. (When loading, the progress indicator would just blink "0 bytes 0/0", and View Source would show an empty file). On the tab bar, the tab would show a favicon if Vivaldi already had one cached for the site, but instead of title text, the tab would just show the raw URL (minus the "http[s]://" protocol prefix). However, on many of the domains I already had tabs open on, or at least had recently visited, I could still navigate to new pages. So perhaps Vivaldi started being unable to do DNS lookup, but could still navigate to pages whose sites had IP addresses it still had cached? Although if it was DNS failure, perhaps one might expect an error page showing "This webpage is not available ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED" or something like that, not a blank page, so I don't know. Fortunately, starting with a fresh user profile by renaming ~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi to ~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi-old and letting Vivaldi automatically generated a fresh folder and cured the problem. (I was able to copy the helpfully named "Notes" and "Bookmarks" files to the new folder without issue so far, and settings like my custom searches I was able to copy from ~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi-old/Default/Local App Settings .) Anyway, has anyone else encountered any of this before? (I tried doing some forum searching but I didn't see anything relevant.)

  • I have been experiencing the same thing - new tabs open a bank page only - frequently. I tend to keep the browser open, so it may be a memory leak or something that happens after x tabs or pages have been opened.

I'll click on a link that opens in new tab, or I'll middle click mouse on a link. The new tab opens, I see in the URL bar the number of requests and bytes. I see the fab icon and the browser Chrome goes to the correct color of the website. But the page is fully blank. Repeated f5 or pressing enter in the URL bar make no difference. Copy the URL and open a new tab and it makes no difference. Paste URL into an already open tab and it works. Open a second vivaldi window (file/new window) and paste URL into a tab there works, but after a while that browser window starts going blank for new tabs as well.

Really infuriates me as it always seems to go blank page just when I really need to see the content or I'm attempting to download something to another person.

Recently I've had to fire up Chrome a few times, just because I need something that works and I have tabs already open in vivaldi that I'm not ready to close for a browser restart.

Hope this helps - I can cause this several times a week so can try and get more info if someone needs it.

This is a well known and frequently mentioned bug. For now, right click on the problem tab and select "duplicate tab" to temporarily solve the issue.

I have had that happen occasionally too, but what I was describing in this thread was much more severe and consistent. Most domains simply weren't accessible, and the duplicate-tab workaround (which I had previously discovered too) didn't help. Fortunately it hasn't happened again since I semi-reset my profile. (That is, started a fresh profile folder and copied over just the notes, bookmarks, and preferences files.)

  • Same here. Browser is unusable.
