Unable to save bookmark

  • After downloading the latest version of Vivaldi, I find that the dropdown menu does not have Save button. I read the recent post "Bookmark Ability" and tried Komposten's suggestion of reducing the size of the "Description" bar - did not work. Any other suggestions? Or - how can I go back to the former version of Vivaldi, which worked fine?

@jfh You need to increase the size of the dialog.

  • Right, Pesala, but how do I go about doing that? I tried reducing the size of the drop down menu by decreasing the "Description" section, as Komposten suggested, and that brought the "Nickname" bar higher, but still no "Save"

@jfh This is how it looks for me in 2.11 Stable.

  • I tried to submit a picture of my panel, but it was rejected as spam. My panel ends just below the word "Nickname", and there is no yellow box (nor has there ever been such a box).

  • In searching for a solution for my problem I came across this post in the forums:
H Problem due to screen resolution (Vers: 2.11)
    Hi all !

I am a great fan of Vivaldi so I happily upgraded to Vers: 2.11 today. As a generalisation, I have not so far found any new features which will be useful to me personally but this does not matter, since I always aim to have the latest version, mainly to get any new security features that have been introduced.

However, I have found a feature which makes this version pretty well unusable for me. I make extensive use of bookmarking, aided by the icon in the address field. I was testing out the new Vivaldi this evening and found, to my dismay, that the drop-down screen which allows the user to specify the destination of the bookmark apparently does not have a "Save" button. This is obviously silly, so I investigated further.

I found that the visibility depends upon the screen resolution. I am both elderly and visually impaired so the highest screen resolution I can comfortably use is 1152 x 864 on my 19-inch flat-screen monitor. With this setting, the "Save" button is hidden. If I set my monitor to a higher resolution of 1280 x 1024, the button will be displayed, although the design of the drop-down is clunky and this must be squashed up to bring the "Save" button into view.

I never found any problem with bookmarking in any of the previous versions of Vivaldi so I conclude that this effect is an artefact of the revised design. I just cannot work comfortably with a higher screen resolution and it would be very tedious to keep altering the resolution, just to bookmark a page and then, to revert back afterwards.

Clearly, therefore, I need to revert back to version 2.10 and stay with this until such times as this trivial bug if fixed (if ever ! ). I have visited the downloads page on the Vivaldi site but all that is offered in version 2.11. (As an aside, who was the idiot who thought it a good idea to specify the version available, using white text on a white background ?).

Can someone kindly advise me as to how I get version 2.10 and how to install this without destroying my carefully-set Profile. My system is a Dell desktop running 64-bit Linux Mint, ver: 17.3. The system has 8 GB of RAM and well over 100 GB of free disc space so ,of course, I need a 64-bit version of Vivaldi.

As a further interesting point, my installation of Vivaldi 2.11 will NOT connect to this forum, losing the connection almost instantly.
I am posting this using Opera, which works flawlessly !

I thank the forum members for reading my post. Best regards to all - - -

Vivaldi Browser For Linux • about 19 hours ago

I use Win 10, not Linux, but I seem to have the same problem with the Bookmark drop down menu. If so, I would have the same issue with changing the screen resolution - if, in fact, the resolution is the problem. I really would appreciate some help with this. Thanks

@jfh I added the yellow highlight to draw attention to the resizing handle, which you must drag up to see the save button. Maybe this problem only affects Linux?

    Specs: AMD A10-6800K, 8 Gb (WinSPRLevel = 5.9) on Win 10 64-bit 1909 build 18363.657 • Snapshot 2.11.1811.28 (64-bit)

  • I had already tried the resizing handle ( as Komposten suggested), but that did not expose the Save button. It is obviously not just a Linux issue, since, as I said, I'm using Win 10. Is it just possible that this is (god forbid) a bit of a bug in the newest iteration of Vivaldi?

@jfh It is not that new. I reported the bug on 29th January.

(VB-62748) Add Bookmark Save/Delete Buttons Hidden by Resizing Description Field

I can easily work around it by resizing the description field, but it is still a bug. This is how big I have to make the dialog on 1920x1080 to make the Save and Delete buttons disappear. On my 1200x1600 portrait monitor I need to make it even longer for that to happen.

  • @Pesala Thanks for reporting the bug. I have found that that I can save a bookmark by using the + symbol in the bookmark panel's search bar. Hopefully Vivaldi will fix the bug eventually. Thanks again.

  • I have been using Vivaldi since the beginning. I have NEVER seen a "save' button.
Oh, I DON'T EVER use full screen, only 60% screen. Maybe why I don't see the button?
I didn't know this was MANDATORY.
    (scrollbars are also missing)

@Pesala On Linux Mint 18 I cannot increase the size of the Save Bookmark dialog, only adjust the size of the Description area.
However I do not get this issue on this particular machine, only my Win10 machine.
Win10 machine has an Intel Graphics chipset.
LM 18 machine has a Radeon HD graphics chipset.

I am now wondering if it is something to do with the graphics cards creating this issue???
Like geardoc47 I also never use V in Maximized mode.

@greybeard If you change the size of the description field doesn't the entire dialog change size?

Compare my two screenshots given above.

  • Ambassador

@Pesala Nope... But it does allow me see the Save & Delete buttons. (On Win10).
Exactly as the screenshots for the Windows machine.

  • @Pesala I see, Pesala, that your report of the bug on Jan.29 apparently didn't make much of an impression, as the latest update of Vivaldi did not solve the problem. Even if, as greybeard indicates, the problem affects only Win 10 Intel equipped machines, shouldn't this be correctable by the browser - a lot of us are stuck with Microsoft. But what do I know?

  • Ambassador

@jfh I suspect that the bug is quite old, but if it was first reported by me about 3 weeks ago, it clearly does not affect most users. I found it difficult to reproduce, and it does not affect me at all unless I go out of my way to resize the description field.

Bottom line: Only critical bugs get fixed quickly, and minor bugs that affect almost no one belong on the back-burner.

I will ask about the bug's status, but don't hold your breath waiting for a fix. Resize the description field to fix it for yourself, or use the Tab key to work around it.

  • @Pesala Thanks, Pesala. I have found that I can save a bookmark by using the + sign and pasting the url in the Title area. Clumsy, but I can live with it. Keeps me from saving unnecessary bookmarks.
