Has font rendering changed?

  • @jackyan Not sure if it's been asked, but I assume this is happening on other sites too? Are you able to find any relation between the type of fonts used and how they render?

There are some flags you could check (defaults):
    chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blacklist (Disabled)
chrome://flags/#disable-accelerated-2d-canvas (Enabled, flag name is misnomer)
    chrome://flags/#enable-oop-rasterization (Default)
    chrome://flags/#font-src-local-matching (Default)

    There's also:
    vivaldi://gpu

Click "Copy report to clipboard" and make it available for instance on https://pastebin.com/
I can compare with my output. Most of the stuff in the first features section should be enabled/green, apart from:
Out-of-process Rasterization, Hardware Protected Video Decode, Skia Renderer

Other than that, and if you're sure you've excluded all possible causes on your Vivaldi install (extensions, GPU override settings, hardware acceleration on/off etc), and since it doesn't seem to happen in other browsers, the best is to report the issue and hope the team is able to reproduce it:
    https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/

I recommend to describe your issue as detailed as possible and include things like screenshots and other information like output from the gpu page above.

  • Hi @Pathduck, that was really helpful, thank you. Yes, it is happening on all sites, whether the fonts are linked or whether they are being loaded from the system.

My flags are identical to the ones you’ve posted.

The report is below, and I have the same ones in green.

Since yesterday, I have tried Chrome and it exhibits this behaviour now, so something must have changed in Chromium. Same story with Edge, now that it’s Chromium-based. Opera and GX seem to be the exceptions.

@jackyan I tried to edit your post. This spam filter is to strict.
    I will try tomorrow.

  • @Gwen-Dragon Thank you, sorry for the trouble.

  • @jackyan That's why I said to use a Pastebin 😉
But my bad, I should've asked for only the Feature Status part. The rest of the stuff is way too technical anyway, and too dependent on different GPUs and workarounds.

But the settings at least are the same. For now I have no idea, I say just report it to the tracker.

FYI I had a look at the site in the other browsers I have installed, Opera, Firefox, (old) Edge - the font looks exactly the same on all browsers.

  • Moderator

@jackyan Edit worked now and i changed long listing to code block.

  • @Pathduck I’ll do that tomorrow (the reporting). Thank you for walking me through this.

Interestingly, Firefox is quite different for me (always has been). I know this is academic (and as I wanted to show text that wasn’t the same as before) …

Opera (and a good proxy for Vivaldi 2.5):
    Opera Snapshot_2020-01-13_132619_vivaldi.com.png

    Firefox
    Firefox_Screenshot_2020-01-13T13-26-59.017Z.png

    Vivaldi 2.10
    2020-01-13 13.27.55 vivaldi.com 46328db64e61.png

For me, Firefox has always been a little heavier, slightly clunkier, which is fine for sans serif body types with low contrast, not so good with finer serif types. (Old) Vivaldi was always the best.

  • @Gwen-Dragon Thank you!
