Chosing what tab is active after closing the one I'm in

  • I usually browse the web in a fashion where i open a bunch of links in a new tab. When I'm done with my original site, I close it with Ctrl+W. In Chrome, this would take me to the "next" tab in line, and I would read it through before I repeat the process with Ctrl+W. In Vivaldi on the other hand, I'm being brought back to my previous active tab, say one of my pinned tabs or whatever. I find this a little disturbing, and as far as I understand; this is something Opera is known for and users like. However, how about turning this into an option, so that the users can chose for themselves? I would really like to be able to keep on surfing the way I'm used to, and I was also lead to believe that Vivaldi was the highly customisable browser for the power user.

The sort of option you are looking for is sure to come to Vivaldi, given the GOAL that its authors have set of it BECOMING a highly customizable browser for the power user. Unfortunately, we must be patient, as Vivaldi has not even reached Beta stage yet, and there is a long way to go before all goals are met.

Every single snapshot that comes out offers us more and more options. Considering where we started a mere seven months ago, the pace of development has been nothing short of astonishing.

  • I guess, but I want it now :silly:

Is this even the right forum for addressing wants and needs in Vivaldi? I mean; I figured I should at least voice the request. Just in case.

This is as good a place to discuss wants and needs as any. I'm sure it helps the devs to prioritize things.

  • Quite a long time ago [in a Vivaldi-existence time frame, not in absolute time] I began using the extension "SimpleTabOrder" from the Chrome store. I set it to open new tabs at immediate rhs of active tab, & to activate the next rhs tab once i closed the current tab. It worked well. Sadly, several V SNs ago, something changed & ever since then this extension mostly does not work properly. Whilst the "open new tabs at immediate rhs of active tab" still seems to work more often than not [but occasionally results in silly things], the "activate the next rhs tab once i closed the current tab" hardly ever works at all now [though sometimes if the moon is full, the wind is blowing from the east, & the local atmospheric pressure is between 101.317392 kPa & 101.317394 kPa it does behave]. When it commonly does not work as it should & as it used to, the tab which actually becomes activated seems entirely random, thus a source of constant surprise & frustration.

Today after checking with the Chrome store that my STO is still the latest version [yes], I noticed an alternative; "Tab Position Options". After installing it in V & experimenting for a while, i report that it suffers the same misbehaviours [in V] as already described for STO.

However, NEITHER of these extensions is to blame; sadly V itself is. I installed both extensions into Chromium [not Chrome – ugh] & tested them each. They both behaved well. Sigh.

    Linux Mint x64 17.2 KDE.

  • Sorry for pushing this topic but I really miss a way to tune the tab behaviour after closing a tab, too. Jumping back to the last active tab is a very bad behaviour when scanning through forums, which I do a lot.
Tried "Tab Position Options" but it's still not working in Vivaldi… Hope this will get some attention by the developers soon.

  • I have to agree 100% with the usage scenario described by the initial post.
The way how the browser currently works always jumping back to the last active tab (original tab from which the link was opened), makes browsing very inefficient.
What I and I'm sure many would like to do, is to open multiple pages from one page, then go through those pages one by one and close them to finally get to the initial page.
Currently, this behavior is the only major reason why I personally can't start using Vivaldi as my preferred browser and unfortunately never will, if this option can't be configured as the way described.

In Opera this was: "When closing a tab = Activate the next tab"

Hopefully it'll come but as an option, the current behavior is one of the best parts of Vivaldi for me and other browsers that don't have the same behavior require me to use extensions to get them to work right. I understand everyone doesn't like it working this way, but options are better than forcing either way.

In the meantime I can suggest that you open up the forum threads you want to go through, select the last one, then scroll up on the tab bar until you reach the first thread you opened. Closing the tab will now take you to the next thread and so on.

  • I have a smiliar problem / suggestion:

I miss the function to switch (two) tabs by simply clicking on the active tab.
This was possible with Opera 12.x.

    Any solution?

Yeah, minimizing tabs would be great and has been requested multiple times.
