Vivaldi launching issue just after the newest update {to 2.9 Stable}.
-
I know there are already some similar threads on the matter - maybe it will be useful to investigate what I've discovered.
Once I've encountered the issue, I tried to do completely fresh Vivaldi installation (Windows 32-bit, Vivaldi stable). The only thing I've set up was the synchronization - which turned out to perform 100% fine (including several restarts to ensure),
What causes the issue (in My case) is switching Force Dark Mode for Web Contents (vivaldi://flags) to Enable. I am excited with this particular Chromium engine feature and wanted to enable it as soon as possible. Unfortunately it seems to cause the trouble: once enabled, Vivaldi does not start anymore - it just shows its window for a moment and then closes itself. I've tried this several times with clean installation (all user data removed), with the same effect.

@ThomasLeigh This bad issue with dark mode flag happened in the Snapshots some weeks ago - I talked about it in https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/327568 and as I wrote in there, if you manually edit your "%localappdata%\vivaldi\user data\Local State" find "dark" in it and change the @1 value to @0 so Vivaldi can start again. This should be definately solved by Vivaldi devs by disabling the reading of that setting, Vivaldi shouldn't crash for unsupported flags.
-
@iAN-CooG Perhaps... but all too often, people treat flags like "advanced settings", not realizing that they enable experimental code or are sometimes used to disable code that's problematic. Vivaldi is tested with flags in their default state. If you change Chromium flags from their defaults, that can sometimes seriously destabilize the browser or lead to very unpredictable results.
This should be definately solved by Vivaldi devs by disabling the reading of that setting, Vivaldi shouldn't crash for unsupported flags.
-
I wanted to use this same flag at one point and it caused issues on Chrome as well. I can't remember the exact error, but as much as I wanted it to work that flag seems to be very raw. I don't know how much QA it's had upstream. I just ended up using an extension/ creating my own css to inject on sites that I wanted to look nice in dark mode.
-
First of all, thank You very much for the solution - thanks to which I don't have to set everything up from scratch. It's amazing that You know such details how it could be fixed manually, editing some text file...
Second:
This should be definately solved by Vivaldi devs by disabling the reading of that setting, Vivaldi shouldn't crash for unsupported flags.
If it won't be read, will the force-dark-theme feature work?

of course not, the whole point is that the feature is not actually working anymore in current builds, so the setting should be really ignored.

Oh... Is there a chance this feature will be working finally? Or is it supposed to be abandoned?
-
@ThomasLeigh There are no signs of Vivaldi abandoning Dark Mode, if that is what you are concerned about. There is an open bug (VB-59151) to address the problem with
#enable-force-dark
(the issue that we are discussing here) as well as several other open bugs related to improving Dark Mode support on various platforms. -
@xyzzy I mean the dark mode feature which makes websites dark - something similar to Dark Reader or other user-custom-CSS extensions. When You say about Vivaldi not abandoning Dark Mode - do You include this ability?
-
@ThomasLeigh yes that's what he means. I suppose you know that with Vivaldi you can apply filters like that to any page right? Called Filter Invert next to the Zoom Reset button on the status bar. We can agree that a permanent switch for that would be more desirable but still does the work if you stay on the same tab.
Alternatively you can bind a key to Reader View (like Alt+R for example) in the settings to switch to a similar dark mode everytime you like. Though the only place where this doesn't work is this forum
-
@npro > I suppose you know that with Vivaldi you can apply filters like that to any page right? Called Filter Invert
I didn't know about it, thank You for pointing this out. Yes, I find permanent switch crucial. Besides, Chromium in-built feature seems to work a little bit more gentle - i.e. it doesn't invert white to total black but dark grey. The perfect solution, however, would be to include scrollbars - like Dark Reader extension, which is able to darken them, too.
For Me dark theme matter means a lot due to My vision. I have dark-themed as much elements throughout OS as I can, either Windows or Android. If Vivaldi will introduce dark-themed settings page, context menu, and so on - it will be a wonderful day to celebrate .
-
@ThomasLeigh yeah got it, then try the other method with Reader View. In the settings you can use your (dark I suppose) theme as a background for it instead of black. But eventually every Chomium based browser will have it. What do you mean though about Vivaldi introducing dark-themed settings page, context menu etc, aren't those already dark in your version?
-

I use dark theme in Vivaldi, but several UI places are still white. I mean settings page (Alt+P), history page, extensions page... and context menu (right click somewhere on a web page, or click on Vivaldi button on the top left). Those places are still white, or maybe I don't know how to dark-theme them.

Yes, I use this - unfortunately it doesn't work on every web page, and if I'd like to customize it, I can do this only through customizing My Vivaldi UI theme - which is ok, but it's not so easy to make both places looking right (for example I could prefer separate text color for Vivaldi UI and Reader Mode - but nut necessarily white).

That can't be right, as long as you use a dark theme in Vivaldi all internal pages should look also dark. On which OS are you? If I'm not mistaken if you are on Windows 10 and you use the dark color the context menu of Vivaldi also turns dark.
If you are on Windows 7 you can add --force-dark-mode --enable-features=WebUIDarkMode to your Vivaldi shortcut after your Target path, it should look like this: "C:\Yourpath\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe" --force-dark-mode --enable-features=WebUIDarkMode" . If you don't know how to do it, I can post a .gif to show you (a bit later). -

Windows 7 32-bit
the newest Vivaldi stable ver.If you are on Windows 7 you can add --force-dark-mode
--enable-features=WebUIDarkMode to your Vivaldi shortcutAmazing, it works!!! This is a wonderful surprise, thank You!!! . I haven't expected that I could have this now!
-
@ThomasLeigh Awesome, glad I could help!
-
The file you want to edit on Ubuntu is:
~/.config/vivaldi/Local\ State
Specifically, you should remove:
"enabled_labs_experiments":["enable-force-dark@7"]
This is a nasty thing to stumble upon, as it completely breaks the browser from opening and there is not an obvious fix for the problem, except finding the file above and manually removing the change. Would be useful to have a "revert to working state" feature.
