Qwant search refuses to connect due to useragent setting
-
Just wanted to start a search using Qwant (it's default for vivaldi, is it?).
Get redirected to a page instead that complains that the User Agent setting is way too verbose and wants me to wait one minute before I may reload.
Other options are to switch the browser or install latest.
(not) very funny..... -
@Gwen-Dragon Weird. Seems the deal with Vivaldi has already ended with them, they're suggesting to install Brave. All the fuss about qwant lasted what, less than a year?
Time to remove this search engine for good, not that it was ever useful to me anyway. -
@iAN-CooG I was using it as default (until 5 minutes ago, that is).
In principle they do have a point, excessive UserAgent settings can help fingerprinting installations. So it is something Vivaldi team might consider changing (or allowing to change without needing extensions). But just completely denying access to the search page is a no-go. That way no one listens to you. So Vivaldi tam should think hard if they intend to keep a search engine in the list that isn't usable :o
Edit: Just saw your edit that it's no longer in the official list anyhow. Had not noticed that, as it was my default....

@Der_Pit Any site that blocks me without reason needs to die and being forgotten by the whole internet ASAP. It's all I care about
-
@Gwen-Dragon Bunch of stupid selfcalled webmasters that should better use their arms to go hoe potato fields, at least they'll do something useful for a change
-
@Gwen-Dragon said in Quant search refuses to connect due to useragent setting:
Qwant blocks Vivaldi 2.9.1699.4 and works with 2.8.1664.44 - crazy!
Maybe its the snapshot version that makes the User Agent setting so dangerously unique?
-
@Der_Pit It should relieve then the more people use it. But .. strange.
-
Damn, that's nasty. I guess they got a good "deal" to push the Brave browser then. It guess in one way it's a logical consequence of the "fingerprint tracking paranoia overkill madness" that's going around at the moment
I believe Qwant at least at some point was (or maybe still is) the default search in Vivaldi, and if so Vivaldi probably has an OK relationship with them, and this was just a badly thought-out idea by some idiot brogrammer.
Guess I'll set a query of "<expletive> you Qwant" and set it to refresh say once a second and just let it run until they ban my IP or something... :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes:

Just wanted to chime in to confirm it doesn't work on android (Vivaldi ver. 2.7.1624.277) neither.
Their loss since I'm sticking with Vivaldi
EDIT: Seems to be working on WIN10 desktop version (Windows 10 OS Version 1809 (Build 17763.805) .
Vivaldi version 2.7.1628.30 (Stable channel) (64-bit) -

They block potential users, which will result in less ad revenue. They're kind of fulfilling that prophecy themselves. (unless there's some behind the scenes money that will tide them over...)
-
They block Chrome 68 (Beta) and Chromium 69 (which is a updated as it can get atm) too.
There there are multiple ways to track and fingerprint users - but they are not needed, because Brave sticks out like a sore thumb too, see https://botsvsbrowsers.org/category/75/index.html
Apart from that:
They use GET requests to retrieve the result instead of POST where the request is inside of the encrypted package - so everyone can read the request and subsequently what I 've searched for.So basically it is BS and FUD and an advertisement for Brave - I wonder what they've got for it ...
-
@QuHno They have an history of having big bugs. So I think it's that rather than an ad for Brave.
But yeah, avoiding Qwant might be a good idea in any case. -
@Cqoicebordel If intended or not, de facto it is a sneaky ad for Brave.
-
A search engine with browser sniffing, apart from surreal, cannot claim to be a private search engine. I still use Startpage to what I consider one of the best.
-
Asked on Twitter and got an answer saying something akin to "it's an experiment, we are aware of the problem, we must do better, sorry"

(Note : Guillaume Champeau works at Qwant) -
@Cqoicebordel «On est au courant pour Vivaldi» («We know about Vivaldi»). Good. But there's no hurry to fix the issue, we already switched to other search engines…
-
Seems they have reverted/fixed the issue.
At least here at home now I can use qwant again (snapshot 2.9.1699.4) -
Not for all. I'm still blocked with the latest snapshot on Linux.
-
Blocked in Linux x86_64 2.9.1699.6 on Kubuntu 19.04.
I used your URL or just qwant.com, same result. -
@Gwen-Dragon I checked on my mac, I'm not blocked anymore (BTW, it doesn't matter anymore), but I'm still blocked on my phone.
