DNS Unlocker drivin me nuts!

  • It seems that I have gotten an advirus and the first I've ever gotten and I got it in your browser and I can't get rid of it. I have uninstalled it from my machine ran the malwarebytes and hitmanpro program and it's still popping up in every window when I start vivaldi even though I opted out forever on their dns unlocker site it doesn't seem to mean forever for them so is there anything I can do ? I'm open to suggestions. Thank for the help.

  • Check your Vivaldi shortcut properties. Maybe the virus added an extra string that will take you to the said website.

  • Also, what was the name of the adware when you 'uninstalled it' and/or as identified by Malwarebytes or Hitman?

  • I do not believe it is about the vivaldi forum. it is rather inside your PC and just happens to trigger at this particuliar site. removal of DNS Unlocker virus is available here - http://scarybearsoftware.com/news/dns-unlocker/

  • In addition to what Pelew said,

To get to the extensions page in Vivaldi, paste this into your address bar:```
    vivaldi://extensions

If there's anything there you don't recognize, remove or disable it and see what happens.

There's nothing strange in the shortcut path.

I have already exhausted all other avenues of removing it from my computer but still it remains in and only in vivaldi while opera and explorer are fine and are not getting these pop up ads like vivaldi is getting.

Also, what was the name of the adware when you 'uninstalled it' and/or as identified by Malwarebytes or Hitman?

It is DNS unlocker it was called in the uninstall menu and I used malwarebytes it identified DNS unlocker and I ran hitman but I don't remember seeing DNS unlocker with that search but it's still popping up in my vivaldi browser no matter what I do to remove it with adware so I probably need to reinstall the browser.

    vivaldi://extensions

If there's anything there you don't recognize, remove or disable it and see what happens.

I have already checked the extensions and there's nothing there except adblocker.

  • Hello Sigra,
You are not the only one to be infected by DNS Unlocker. A cursory search finds myriad examples of people with infected Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer browsers. As is pointed out at scarybearsoftware.com/news/dns-unlocker/ and at malwaretips.com/blogs/ads-by-dns-unlocker-removal/, people are bundling DNS Unlocker with free applications and not telling users. It is sad, but users need to be more careful about installing freeware from dubious sources.

I would suggest using the steps outlined at http://malwaretips.com/blogs/ads-by-dns-unlocker-removal/. They are reputable and their utilities will not infect your system with malware. There is an additional procedure outlined in the comments section that I have seen elsewhere that you may want to try. It is relatively easy and only requires that you check your IP4 settings.

If, after all this, you are still infected or if your other browsers start to show signs of infection, then you should create an account at bleepingcomputer.com, and ask for help. These people are the best and have been around for many years. If you want to see examples of what they do, look at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/588052/i-cant-delete-a-program-called-dns-unlocker-no-matter-what-i-try/. They are actively helping someone with eradicating DNS Unlocker from their system. WARNING: Don't try to follow along and use the steps outlined for this particular user. Each user has different configurations and needs, and what is appropriate for one may not be for another.
    Good luck,
    Norio

  • Hi, have you check temp folder or System files folder for any unknown documents? Last week I solved the problem with some free steps in this post. Hope it works for you as well.

  • Vivaldi Translator

This has nothing to do with Vivaldi browser.

I am guessing DNS Unlocker simply changes your DNS setting in your network devices.
This is an example with manual configuration

Open the properties for your device that you connect to the router with and set it all to automatic.
This will make you use the DNS of your ISP.

If you want a DNS that does not redirect, use Steve Gibsons DNSBench tool to find a fast one.

  • Hello Sigra,

I had the similar issue. When I installed one program many DNS unlocker ads appeared in my computer. I didn't know what to do and wasn't sure how to do it so I searched and found this guidance: http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-dns-unlocker-adware.html . It was clearly explained and for now, I have DNS unlocker ads removed.

  • I could'nt eliminate it for ages I thought! All familiar tools did'nt help at all in this case, till finally i tried http://pcspywareshield.com/guides/dns-unlocker/ and now my PC is eager and healhty :)
