How To: Share Tabs Between Devices / Send Tab to Computer

keyboard history and remote sessions [is] deselected

This is the issue I think. If you're not syncing remote sessions, then you won't see remote sessions.

  • You have to enable 2 flags in all your browsers by taping Vivaldi://flags in your address bar
And then search shared clipboard and enable the 2 flags (in Windows there may be only 1 flag)
    #shared-clipboard-ui
    #shared-clipboard-receiver
On Android in order to apply the flags, you need 2 reboots of Vivaldi. 2020-05-06 17.12.53 flags 39f598a2-579e-4d97-b451-d4470b7d8f2f.jpg

  • @BoneTone Working for me now after having this flag enabled. Strangely I was first only able to send tabs to my tablet and not from my tablet, but it's working both ways now after waiting another day 😂

Were the settings that explicit before (remote sessions being related to history being exchanged)? I thought I had read them thoroughly, but maybe I was just a moron.

That's not accurate, these flags are related to a different feature. I think you just finally got synced to the server and hence it's working. Try setting those flags back to default. That's what I have for those flags and I'm sending tabs back & forth between my browser instances without issues, so enabling those flags is definitely not required.

Yeah, that sounds exactly like you had to wait for sync to complete. That's the same thing with mine. I would watch the sync go, updating over 800 thousand items over the course of many hours. Once that completed I was then able to send tabs back & forth.

  • It wasn't any option relate to "self" from vivaldi://flags. Has this method change from Vivaldi desktop browser ? Honestly , I ever can send tab from desktop to Android or vice versa since using Vivaldi.

From my separate post couple of months ago I was told to settle down all my sync complete in order to go further "send to tab" process otherwise it won't succeed. Today I look-up my sync status and it seems is completed.

    Thank you very much.

  • @eeeemc yes, the flags are gone, see the OP for an update.

Also, if it was me that replied in the other thread, that's not where I said to check your sync status, but using sync internals at vivaldi://sync or vivaldi://sync-internals. If you read through this thread, especially page 2, I explain it all with screenshots. You'll forgive me if I don't rewrite it all again here, it's quite a lot and still easily accessible right here.

Edit: one thing I will reiterate now though is that you should verify that both devices have successfully completed syncing -- not through the page in your screenshot, but as I described previously in this thread.

Edit 2: yes, it was me, you should know where to look and how to wait before you'll be able to send between devices based on your old thread where I included screenshots as well. If you're still confused though, reading through the help I gave someone else in this thread should clear everything up. It just gets clutters the thread making it harder to find useful information if I keep repeating the same directions and screenshots, so I prefer to refer to the existing posts and keep the thread as useful as possible.

  • @eeeemc I'm just curious if you got it working... What OSes & Vivaldi versions are you using? The latest version of Vivaldi Andriod Snapshot has an issue that has broken this functionality, but that should be resolved soon. One time it took my almost a week to get one of my Vivaldi Android instances to finish the initial sync. I kept hitting some issue after a few hundred thousand updates were downloaded, and it would have to start over. So a little patience is required if you are sync'ing large amounts of data.

  • @BoneTone Thank you !!

    Nup ... never works.

  • @eeeemc
Hi, I don´t re read the thread, do you meant you cant send tabs from Android to desktop?
This is working since Vivaldi snapshot 1971.3 ([Regression] Cannot share tabs with sync VAB-1752).
Btw. your desktop version is not up to date.

    Cheers, mib

  • @eeeemc

You're running an old version on your desktop. What about the other device? It takes at least two instances of Vivaldi, both should be updated to the current version, and both must be synced successfully before you'll be able to make use of this feature.

  • Thanks to all !!

I can see from right click showing send tab to my other laptop computer as it's name showing.

ANY FACTORS why I cannot see my 2 handheld devices from this right click context menu ?

In my handheld device I updated from Play store ., and I also go to Vivaldi://flags enabling send tab to self also enabling Enable sending sharing message via sync.

I also cannot find from handheld from where I can send handheld tab to desktop browser.

    Thank you very much.

  • @eeeemc Have you done the steps outlined to verify your handsets have completed the sync process successfully? The steps to send from handled devices is described in the OP.

  • Recently found this feature, but haven't been able to get it to work. Regardless of sync state/setup, my Android devices give me the Turn on sync to share across devices error, with a button to Go to Vivaldi settings.

Anyone else have pointers on getting this to work? Is the problem just me, or does the feature actually not work yet?

It would be super handy to be able to do this without making sure both browsers are synced and then finding the tab from among my (many) synced devices.

Also, it looks like this feature (currently) only exists in Android/mobile, and I can't push a tab from desktop to mobile, is that correct?

  • @Llamanerds
Hi, this is a bug but fixed in latest snapshot.
Android snapshot is from Juli 9, 2020 so it is time for next stable anyway but I don´t know the release cycle exactly.

    Cheers, mib

What @mib2berlin said. There was a bug introduced that causes the error you're seeing, but it has already been fixed in the snapshot. It should be in the next stable release.

Also, the feature exists everywhere, including desktop. To send a tab from a desktop instance to any other instance of Vivaldi (not just mobile) there is an item in the context menu to send the current tab when you right click on the page. Naturally, both sending and receiving instances need to have recently completed a sync process to the same account successfully.

  • A short note that might save time for someone in the future:
You need to right-click on the page itself to access this option.
    Don't right-click on the tab.

  • @dagufri I thought I had that in the OP already, I'll update it when I get to my desk and can grab a screenshot. Thanks.

  • Do you know if it's possible to send tab groups and if tabs sync their history?

  • @poopooracoocoo said in How To: Share Tabs Between Devices / Send Tab to Computer:

Do you know if it's possible to send tab groups and if tabs sync their history?

I don't know about the history... try it; let us know.

For tab groups, yeah, but the mechanisms are different. On the desktop, I select the tabs I want to send in the Window Panel, bring up the context menu (such as via right-click) and copy the address, then paste it wherever I want to send them. On Android, I almost always first rename the tab group (this just makes browsing the groups easier anyways, regardless of sharing), then when looking at the tab group, if you click the overflow menu (3 vertical dots) there is a share option, and send it wherever you want to share it. I like sending it via email, as the tab group name automatically becomes the subject of the email.

By sharing groups this way, not only can I open the tabs on any of my devices, but the emails make a nice archive of "saved sessions," effectively extending that feature to Android as well.
