Vivaldi crashes system!

  • I just installed the TP4 package (64 bit rpm). Starting vivaldi and accessing settings from the menu "crashes" my system. That is, the OS seems to be working, but the displays go blank ("powersave" message appears on my main display). I haven't tried a remote login to see if the system itself is still up, though it appears to be from the system LEDs. I'm running OpenSuSe 13.1 with FVWM window manager, on a T61 Thinkpad (Intel graphics, not a GPU).

  • Hi, welcome to the Vivaldi forums.

I don't remember having this issue with TP4, but it has been awhile since that was the most recent version, and I have a pretty awful memory. My advice would be to try and download the latest snapshot version from the devs' blog and see if it still crashes.

  • Thanks, I'll give that one a try when I have a moment.

Would be nice if there was a link to latest version on the web page - I thought the TP4 I downloaded WAS the newest version!

  • Yeah, there was a thread on the forums a long while ago suggesting that a link to the latest snapshot be added to the download page. I don't know what happened with that, but there is a link to the devs' blog - which is where the snapshots are posted.

  • Same thing happens with the latest (I think) version: vivaldi-snapshot-1.0.233.3-1.x86_64.rpm. I start vivaldi, go to "tools/settings", change the startup option* to start with home page, then click on "appearance", and the crash happens.

*Can I be the only one who thinks defaulting to "start with last session" is just asking for trouble, expecially in non-stable code?

  • I can't reproduce it on my system :/

I hope this gets solved soon, but I have no further ideas.

I start with last session and don't normally have any issues, but I do normally close all of my open tabs before closing the browser.

I can not reproduce this either, but I'm Ubuntu with Unity on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon with a lot of memory. How much memory is available on the T61 before Vivaldi is opened?

  • @Tiamarth:

I start with last session and don't normally have any issues, but I do normally close all of my open tabs before closing the browser.

Sure, if you close tabs and shut down normally, it should work just fine. (Though it's not how I prefer to work.) I was thinking of the case where some page crashes vivaldi. Restart with the same page, and it immediately crashes again, and again and again…
