URL autocomplete
-
Hi, First of all, I would like to say that Vivaldi is amazing, especially its user interface is really nice looking compared to other browsers on linux. I encountered a problem with Vivaldi, which I am not sure whether it's really a bug or if it's just me being a pain in the a** When I type the word "you" to get to youtube.com the url is autocompleted as shown in the picture I've attached. I think it would make more sense if the address bar was just autocompleted with just the domain youtube.com instead of that long url. Also the behavior seems kind of random because there are times I type "you" and it is autocompleted with just the domain but other times, it displays the whole url of a video or an old search query. Even without pressing enter to actually visit the site, if I delete "you" and type it again, it autocompletes with something different each time. Thank you Attachments:

It's not only you, this was discussed before and Jon himself told the autocomplete will require some love but will take time as it took years for Presto Opera to reach its level.

Any news to this? I'd rather have "youtube.com" autofill rather than some random sub-page within youtube.com.

i dont know why an option for "autocomplete to domain only" is so hard. this topic keeps coming up on various posts.

Has anything been changed? Anybody?
Never mind. I found a solution that works for me:)
What was said solution?

I'm giving Vivaldi another chance after 2 years of not using it and I can't believe this is still an issue. I'm getting awkwardly-long URL suggestions from the autocomplete feature. Is this expected to be improved in the near future?

in latest 1.9 snapshot it got better, it selects the shorter url from your history first
-
@Gwen-Dragon I just came back to mention it! I've installed the latest snapshot and seems to be working perfectly. Yeyyy!
-
@eddydc: No. It's a bug the developers are working on fixing for the next stable.
-
@eddydc: Yes. That's the current Stable. "Next" stable will be 1.10.
-
@eddydc When the coders get it figured out.
-
@kikendo I'm using a 1.11 snapshot, and this issue seems to be fixed in the first snapshot of 1.11 with the changelog "Suppress autocompletion if typed matches domain or ends with a slash VB-27956".
I don't seem to be getting any problems with it anymore. Now, the only thing that needs improving on autocomplete is the speed. It's a little sluggish in Vivaldi, whereas it's super fast in Firefox and Opera.
Also, the way FF's and O's autocomplete works I believe is that they don't generate an URL everytime you enter a new letter for the already autocompleted URL. Ex. If I type "y" for youtube, but then type the "o" to further complete it, in FF, the "youtube.com" will stay, whereas in Vivaldi, it'll regenerate. That is another behavior that needs fixing, then it'll be like the others in autocomplete.
-
That works, but it doesn't seem like the right answer.
There's still an issue as I'd prefer bookmarks first. With the option checked history & bookmarks are taking precedence over the domain. How do we get history separated from bookmarks for this feature?

I can't use vivaldi on my new install on my notebook...Vivaldi is always changing what I type into the address bar. And, autocomplete is off. What gives?
I'm at my desktop at the moment, because I can't use the notebook's Vivaldi install.Something is not fixed.
-
@kgw Vivaldi does not differentiate between notebook and desktop. They are the same version. Mobile is different, but that is for the Android OS, not notebooks.
The difference you see will be down to differences in the installs, or the hardware - not the program.
-
I see that if I put a "d" before all else, then a space, Vivaldi lets me alone On this desktop install, I don't have to do that. How can this be accomplished on the notebook fresh, latest, Vivaldi install?
-
@gwen-dragon
I would prefer the behavior as usual: I right-click the address bar, which turns the existing text red (if there is any), and type an unobstructed phrase, and then hit enter.
Is this still possible?
-
@kgw That should always cause Vivaldi to search in your default search engine. That's how Vivaldi Desktop is built. If that is not happening, then somehow you have no default search engine set, or there is something broken about your install. What have you set as your default search engine?
-
@kgw Extensions can also break Vivaldi normal behavior. Do you use any extensions on your notebook?
