Import from firefox does nothing

@TheBestPessimist Hi, and welcome to the Vivaldi Community! I've asked about this internally. I don't support Vivaldi on Windows but it looks like it may be the same issue as a reported bug that got closed as "Cannot Reproduce."

Well, i for one can totally reproduce it :(.
If it helps, i remember that firefox gave me a choice sometime ago to use "independent of browser version (beta, alpha, stable, dev)" user profiles, and i've accepted that, so maybe this ff feature is breaking something in the "profile detector".
-
This is my Firefox Profile Path: AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5vo7ujvh.default
Vivaldi imports the bookmarks without any obvious problem.
I suggest reinstalling Firefox.

The bug is that vivaldi did not find the correct profile path. See explanation here: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/305556
-
@TheBestPessimist That is why I suggested reinstalling Firefox. Obviously, it found mine OK.
-
Seems like Firefox is a moving target and changes the name of the folder. I have a absolut default install and now my profile path is
H:\Users\surf\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\4y4bvjuj.default-1516165001063
... but I assume that the Vivaldi devs read out the profile.ini and the correct relative path is noted there...
-
-
@TheBestPessimist I still cannot reproduce it. I just imported successfully all data to the latest stable, snapshot and the internal build via the Welcome Page.
(V-Menu > Help > Welcome Page)- Is it a standard install of Firefox?
- Do you import with the importer in the bookmarks manager or via the Welcome Page?
Would you mind copying the contents of the the
profiles.ini
file from%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox
here? -
Here it is:
[Install308046B0AF4A39CB] Default=Profiles/j4ngba4s.default-release Locked=1 [Profile1] Name=default-release IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/j4ngba4s.default-release [Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/m2otbpq8.default Default=1 [General] StartWithLastProfile=1 Version=2
It seems that i did have a profile
m2otbpq8.default
, and it also isDefault=1
, however there is no such folder on the disk, and firefox (at least currently) usesPath=Profiles/j4ngba4s.default-release
.Could it be that i used the old profile up until that "different profiles" message, when it was "upgraded" to the new one?
One thing which could be doable is detect all the profiles, and let the user choose (eg. in case the "default" profile gives me nothing, then i can select the "default-release" profile which gives me all my bookmarks and history, etc.)

@TheBestPessimist
OK, we can try the following:-
Close Firefox,
-
Go to the profile folder make a backup-copy of the profiles.ini to another place where you can find it again. To be 100% on the save side you can of course make a backup of the whole
%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox
folder. -
Open the profiles.ini with an editor, e.g. notepad (not an word processor like Word!)
-
Replace the content with the following
[Install308046B0AF4A39CB] Default=Profiles/j4ngba4s.default-release [Profile0] Name=default-release IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/j4ngba4s.default-release Default=1 [General] StartWithLastProfile=1 Version=2
- Save it (Don't open Firefox! I don't know enough of Firefox to be 100% sure that it works. An initial test with my Firefox install worked, but YMMV)
- Try importing to Vivaldi again. Does it work?
- replace the profiles.ini with the backup copy
(If you have backuped the whole folder, you might want to experiment with the original and look if it starts with the changed profiles.ini and if it still contains all data. DO SO AT YOU OWN RISK! In doubt you should be able to use the backup if it doesn't work out as expected ... )
-
-
btw, i have already imported all my firefox data in vivaldi, by just creating the folder that vivaldi expected (
m2otbpq8.default
), and copying the contents of the "correct" folder (j4ngba4s.default-release
) -
@TheBestPessimist That was of course an option too
-
I can confirm that the issue is still present with FF 71.
The problem isn't FF, the problem is in Not being able to edit/redirect to the correct path within vivaldi IMO -
the issue still present in FF 72 and I can't migrate to Vivaldi
-
G'Day,
Meanwhile FF 81.02 64bit is out and it still is not possible to import settings.
Bookmarks should not be a problem using HTML, but i would like to migrate my passwords.
Is there a workaround changing the profile.ini?Btw. FF is installed in the default location, Vivaldi is not, but that should not make any difference, i assume?
Cheers, werner

Sorry, i forgot to add that what i get when trying to import is a popup:
Close Browser Before Importing
To finish importing close all Firefox windows.
Try Again Cancel -
I had no issue importing firefox passwords into vivaldi.I exported the firefox passwords into a HTML file and vivaldi imported them just fine.
i am using linux. -
Another addendum:
I am using Win7 Pro 64bit
-
Read out the very first posts from OP, it explains how to solve it Manually.
You could just Rename or use a Symbolic Link instead of Copy / Paste whole data.
An easy way on Win would be: Sym Link Creator.--
