What’s Vivaldi’s business model?
-
@Pathduck I use StartPage because I get Google results without the extensive tracking. For your example Jottacloud, the first is the cloud provider's link as it should be.
Also tracking goes way beyond having a Google account, that is just voluntary given data but everyone provides data. Also evading by deleting cookies is not a possibility for quite some time now due to various techniques like browser fingerprinting, (misusage of) local storage etc. Additionally Google has DoubleClick, Analytics, Adwords/Ads etc. to track you around the web without you being logged in. I use uBO-Scope to record which third-party ressources are used by web pages and in the last 30 days 73 % used Google Analytics so one can guess that aggregating data to generate profiles is not a matter of just having a Google account.
I agree that one should not be logged into social media accounts permanently and lament about tracking since assigning data to a single person is way easier like that. But still, this is not a solution against tracking so stop worrying is too simple.
I hope this does not sound high and mighty. I just want to inform you about tracking (and I did only scratch on the surface :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_cold_sweat: ...). -
In the O12 days, it was said that revenue were ~1$/year/user.
Can you share the current amount ?
-
@Cqoicebordel Per Jon, in a magazine article last year, "We generate revenue of about US$1 per user on average from search deals and from some of the included bookmarks."
-
Not even 24 hours have passed and I am in love with Vivaldi! This browser is everything anyone could want, unless you want data-tracking!
-
THanks. That was helpful.
Always wondered how I could help you without spending money directly

This article convinced me to use some search engine in parallel. At lease ecosia!

My built-in booking.com bookmark was https://vivaldi.com/bk/bookingcom-en-us, which is always takes me to the US booking.com website, which only offers accommodation within the United States. Since I'm travelling much more frequently to other countries than the USA, it wasn't very useful for me, so I had to change it to www.booking.com simply. Now I learned from this post that there is an other https://vivaldi.com/bk/bookingcom-en-gb link, which takes me to the international site, so I just changed my bookmark to this new address. Please try to avoid directing sponsored bookmarks to the USA only sites, since probably for the most users it will not be as useful as the international sites!
-
@Zsul What is your Windows locale? I think that the default bookmarks depend on that.
-
@Pesala Well, it was on a CentOS with a Hungarian MATE graphical interface, but I do not know which settings really matters here.
-
Thank you for providing this info. I appreciate this business model and will do my best to support it by using the bookmarks and revenue-generating search engines.

I've been meaning to ask this; You said all but Google pay to be included, but do they all pay the same amount, or does one or more pay more to be in Vivaldi? Do they pay every time we search, and do some pay more for that?
-
@fred8615 Each contract stands on its own.

Didn't really answer my question. I thought if there was one that paid more, I wouldn't mind using it to help out more.
-
@fred8615 That strikes me as proprietary information that the parties would be unlikely to discuss.
-
@Ayespy Fair enough.

I feel like you should accept donations also, because there are people who would like to donate these kind of services. For example, I don't mind to donate $5 for Vivaldi Browser.

We are looking into ways for people to support us. Feels good to hear that you would be willing to chip in. Donations is an obvious way. What kind of donation system would you prefer? PayPal button and /or maybe Patreon?

@christian , what about Dash? (Open Source)

I already use patreon for other things so that would probably be easiest.
