What’s Vivaldi’s business model?

    @Knuthf said in What’s Vivaldi’s business model?:

@christian: I search in Google to see if others have searched for similar things - what others do. But when I need the correct answer and I know what I search for, just "where did I read it" - the old Kvasir search, I cannot use Google or Bing or even Yahoo: they all are biased. Quant gives me the answer. I could not care less about everything else - and I wonder who cares? Certainly not in business use!

That's an interesting observation. I did use the Qwant app on my phone for quite some time and I have to say I drew the same conclusion after a few months.

Great insight as to what Vivaldi is doing and what Vivaldi stands for.
As for Search Engines, I primarily use DDG as I cannot get Startpage to work in the Search engines box. (I use custom settings whch generates a custom URL that V won't accept.) and Bing.
I have tried many and have found that Bing gives the most :Relevant" results for my searches.
    Cheers.

@Catweazle @Catweazle Not quite what it looks like...

    Plain text:

Obfuscated (usually use since it first came out as it was only option):

V doesn't seem to like it. It won't put the search string in the SP Search, just a blank Startpage.
I've reported it. I just bookmark it for now.

The link I give is for this box

    @Catweazle Yep, done that.
Also tried unchecking POST since it is on in Startpage. Thought maybe there would be a conflict. Then Saved
Regular Window or Private Window, both the same.

  • I fricking love you guys, for so many reasons, with this being right at the top of my list!

Love you too. You ain't seen nothing yet. We may not be super fast but we sure listen to you guys. 🙂

  • This is a great story. Like Vivaldi Ambassador, The business model of Vivaldi is fabulous. As Vivaldi respects privacy, I utilize Vivaldi browser and its mail. Especially, I feel comfortable to use when I take advantage of Vivaldi free email service because there are no ads. Vivaldi is not looking for making profit like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Yandex, or other.

  • @christian While i use many different search engines, the lack of search operators/options in most of the engines sadly drives me back to Google. Thinks like defining image search for 8MP transparent photo of the file type PNG, with CC0 license uploaded on a precise date, or related:vivaldi.com, link:vivaldi.com, intitle:vivaldi browser, intext:vivaldi browser, allinanchor:browser, define:browser, Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner filetype:doc (or what filetype suffix you looking for), and of course the life saving Google search command: do a barrel roll, and many more search operator.

But also the specialized search on: scholar.google.com

I hope others is catching up, while they don't necessarily need to ”copy”  the exact functionality, it would be welcome to see some development in this area.

Yeah, for me there's no beating Google in terms of quality of results. It seems to me most of the other engines I'd like to use instead, like Ecosia, Qwant or DuckDuckGo, return results very similar to Bing, tend to emphasise results from the Microsoft store, and are generally useless for some searches.

A quick example, I did this some days ago searching for the site of a cloud storage provider.

    Qwant: https://www.qwant.com/?client=brz-vivaldi&q=Jottacloud
1st MS store. 2nd some useless link aggregator. Then several reviews and articles, and Facebook sites. Google.no for some reason is there. I could not find the actual site even when scrolling far far down. 👎

    DuckDuckGo: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Jottacloud&ia=web
Reviews, Facebook site, Twitter, MS Store, Google Play app. Nowhere is the actual site. 👎

    Ecosia: https://www.ecosia.org/search?tt=vivaldi&q=Jottacloud
Same as above, MS Store result placed on top, mostly useless results, no actual site. 👎

    Google: https://www.google.com/search?q=Jottacloud
First result is the site url, including their about, download, prices and features links... 👍

There's no way these guys can compete with Google without seriously improving the quality of the results.

And for those concerned about Google and privacy: You don't actually need a Google account to use Google Search. At least for now 😉

If your browser in addition is set to delete cookies when a tab is closed, there's no way they can "track" you. Yes they can store what people in general search for, and maybe even link your IP to the result, if they actually cared to (which I doubt, what would be the use).

Problem is people seem unwilling to give up their free Facebook/Google/Yahoo/Instagram/Twitter accounts, and at the same time complaining about them tracking your habits. Well, duh... 🤦♂ Simple solution: Close your social media accounts and stop worrying.

Well that's my little rant for today 😊

  • @Pathduck I use StartPage because I get Google results without the extensive tracking. For your example Jottacloud, the first is the cloud provider's link as it should be.
Also tracking goes way beyond having a Google account, that is just voluntary given data but everyone provides data. Also evading by deleting cookies is not a possibility for quite some time now due to various techniques like browser fingerprinting, (misusage of) local storage etc. Additionally Google has DoubleClick, Analytics, Adwords/Ads etc. to track you around the web without you being logged in. I use uBO-Scope to record which third-party ressources are used by web pages and in the last 30 days 73 % used Google Analytics so one can guess that aggregating data to generate profiles is not a matter of just having a Google account.
I agree that one should not be logged into social media accounts permanently and lament about tracking since assigning data to a single person is way easier like that. But still, this is not a solution against tracking so stop worrying is too simple.
I hope this does not sound high and mighty. I just want to inform you about tracking (and I did only scratch on the surface 😅 ...).

  • Vivaldi Translator

In the O12 days, it was said that revenue were ~1$/year/user.

Can you share the current amount ?

  • Moderator

@Cqoicebordel Per Jon, in a magazine article last year, "We generate revenue of about US$1 per user on average from search deals and from some of the included bookmarks."

  • Not even 24 hours have passed and I am in love with Vivaldi! This browser is everything anyone could want, unless you want data-tracking!

  • THanks. That was helpful.
Always wondered how I could help you without spending money directly
    Wolfgang

  • This article convinced me to use some search engine in parallel. At lease ecosia!
