Locked out of account

  • I have had to reinstall my OS and when I've come to sign in to download my bookmarks etc it's asking for the ENCRYPTION key when I never set anything other my Vivaldi.net login credentials and it won't have that password?? its logged in? this is the extra password you can set to encrypt or something i remember seeing it in the settings but I never set it, now the only way back in is to lose all my content it says??

what can I do? I dont want to lose all my stuff if i can help it as its gonna be a pain setting it all up again

So I guess you are using SYNC for this.

For sync you have a login AND an encryption for the data, see https://help.vivaldi.com/article/sync/

@snadge originally the encryption password was optional. Just try using your account password.

  • As I said in my original post I never set up a second "key" to encrypt 'sync' nor will it accept my password

I did see it in the options and wondered why it was there, but believe me when I say I did not set another password... all I did for 'sync' was logged in with my forum password and it worked, however, coming on to a new install its asking for a second passphrase for the "encryption" and I did not set one? why doesn't Vivaldi just use the PASSWORD for the encryption phase?

am I right in assuming that my passwords are stored in plain text??? (if one doesnt set a second password/phrase for encryption)

can someone please help me repair this issue?
its saying its encrypted and to enter password, I do that and it says its incorrect... I did not set up any second 'passphrase' for encryption so why is it asking for one?

No. SImple said: the generation of encryption key was done by your OS and the login database (with passwords) is encrypted by this key.

You have to enter the same password as in forum, so it can be saved in login database.

    I tested:
    Opened Settings → Sync
    Login
    Hit Start Syncrhonisaztion
    Leave password empty
    Hit OK
    Hit Proceed without separe password
    Hit Start Synching

  • ive done all that and it says "PASSWORD IS INCORRECT" even though I can log in to the browser...when i go to SYNC it asks for the password (even though it shows you as being logged in) and says its incorrect when I enter it... it also does this during installation aswell as after installation.

its almost as if a second password WAS set and this is what it is looking for?
nobody has set a second password, im the only person in my flat and the only person with access to my PC so nobody else has set this password?

theres obviously an issue with the browser or the service, all ive ever done is:-

    1. install Vivaldi
    2. during setup created a vivaldi login
    3. it auto logs you in during setup and creation of vivaldi login
    4. i set it up with my bookmarks and extensions
    5. after 5 days use I had to reinstall my OS after a problem with dual-booting linux.
    6. installed Vivaldi again on fresh install of win10prox64
    7. go to log in during install and it says the password is incorrect (yet shows me as logged in the browser in the top right corner)
    8. go to settings and try to sync and again it says the password is incorrect

However, experience tells me that I'm not gunna get any further forward with the type of problem of it is, so I just chose to sign in and reset & re-install my addons, themes and bookmarks

thanks for your help I really appreciate it

    thanks anyway

No, you're not right. Data is always encrypted, but if you don't set a second password it will use your account password for encryption and then any hacker that manages to invade Vivaldi servers and manages to obtain your password will have access to your data, this will also apply if the Icelandic government demands Vivaldi to send their database to whoever (a gov agency, another gov, some random ass).

As for restoring your data, your encryption password should be the same as your Vivaldi account password. Another possibility I can think is that it's an empty string, but I'm unsure how to tell Vivaldi to try that instead of showing an error that it's too short.

Probably support could check that with the devs to know what password it would use, but I don't think they work on weekends.

  • I'm having the exact same problem. Have they looked into this yet?

  • Moderator

@mullerick You'll probably need to talk with support, I don't think they have added anything to the browser to work around these cases as of now.

  • @An_dz Okay, thanks. Can I ask how I can prevent this from happening again? Since it's not a big deal I created another account. I don't know how to set up the encryption password. Was never asked to create one.

  • @mullerick You can enter the encryption password when setting up Sync in vivaldi://settings/sync/.

  • @luetage I never saw that when I synced it. Or if I did, I missed it. I just log in and nothing happens. Does this mean I cant do it now?

  • Moderator

@mullerick You could skip it before, but they changed that to explain users why it's good to have a second password and to make sure one is setup, even if you put the same password as your account's.

If you don't mind erasing what's on the server you can just click the button that tells to clear all the data from the server and star anew with the data currently on the Vivaldi instance you're using to sync. This should, theoretically, stop this bug on your account.

  • I have the same issue, can´t log in without being asked for sec. password!!
And I hundred% sure I never set a second. password.

Does anybody know what to do about this.
Cause I do not want to reset everything when I go for sync.!!

It bothers me kind of because you cant keep your workflow when interrupted like this. Takes at least 15-20 min of my time and sometimes like now for example, I cant do my work :-((

I have read the comments but it´s not a solution to reset all data and start from scratch.

Just tried for the last 30min- 40min to find out my sec. password!!!
Found it!! I have to revoke my statement, guess I somehow put in a password for encryption but couldn´t remember it anymore. But it is my password for sure.

    Sorry!!

@OIIO If you do never had a second password, leave the password field empty, then the forum login's will be used for encryption.

  • @Gwen-Dragon Thank you for your quick respond. I found my password!! I'm sorry for stealing your time.
