Edge is now a real competitor since Vivaldi still has no mobile version

  • Microsoft Edge was first available on mobile, Android its just Chrome but it works well. The new Edge based on Chromium for desktops, you can download and test this already if you run Windows 10 is also based on Chromium and will be cross platform. For my surprise it works really well and since Microsoft already has Edge on Android I wonder how many people will be tempted to switch just because of the sync to their phones and running the same browser on all their systems. I don't even need or want sync to my phone but I would like to be able to push a site or tab from my desktop to my phone or tablet for testing or the other way around.
I think Vivaldi should really hurry up with having some Android version available. Why is this taking so many years? It seems developing a Chromium based mobile browser is easier then desktop but so far there is not even an alpha or beta to test, no news at all about mobile. The browser does not need to have the same features as Vivaldi desktop as it's a completely different user interface and experience, touch and small screen requires a different GUI.

@terere Vivaldi is working on their mobile version as fast as they can, it's in broad testing, and Jon predicts it will be released this year. Given the state of it on my phone, that seems very possible to me.

What do you mean giving the state on your phone? I'm reading a mobile version now for 2 years and they always say its going to be released soon. I'm not even sure one exists.

@terere I have it on my phone (as an internal tester), so it exists.

@terere Yes, It exists, internal testers having it on their phones.

  • Great, that is wonderful news. I was not aware there was an alpha already for internal testing. I guess I will have to wait, hope its this year.

  • I can't see, how Edge really is a competitor for Vivaldi, because it's certainly only interesting for those who are not logged in Google services as in need of using Chrome but in M$-services.
Vivaldi in my opinion is really about features and having an Android version would be nice, but there definitely much more options there, as there's a plethora of capable browsers anyway.
The contrary might be true. With Edge changing to Chromium, there's a growing awareness that other Chromium-based browsers might by their sheer existence and by their features a real alternative for Chrome itself without loss of much in day-to-day-work.
Edge seems like a real Chrome-clone, while Vivaldi as well as Opera and in some respect even Brave offer real alternatives, UI- and featurewise.

… is useless if you need Google's services.

In terms of having access to high performance video codecs, Edge was always better than the other browsers for windows 10. Now that its moving to chromium, I would hope that these same features might eventually trickle down to Vivaldi.

As for the original topic, mobile space, I'm not sure if much has changed since they already had mobile even back before it used the chromium engine.

May be, if Edge does use a MS-only patched API for codecs, Vivaldi will not get such advantage.

  • Edge, with all of its 9 Settings options.
