Vivaldi Downloading All The Time!?

  • Running Vivaldi version 2.2.1388.37 64 bit under Windows 7 64 bit.

This is a new/fresh installation of the operating system and of Vivaldi.

With Vivaldi open and with just a blank page (no web site), Vivaldi seems to be downloading all the time in the background!? This is according to W7 Resource Monitor.

This downloading is not really wanted as I'm on a slow internet connection and the downloading is causing severe bandwidth issues when trying to open web sites and it takes ages to view web site pages!

What is Vivaldi downloading and can this be stopped (permanently)??

  • @meeshu said in Vivaldi Downloading All The Time!?:

Running Vivaldi version 2.2.1388.37 64 bit under Windows 7 64 bit.

I recommend you upgrade to the current Vivaldi 2.4 (Stable) - see https://vivaldi.com/blog/minor-update-2-for-vivaldi-2-4/

  • Why?

So the earlier version of Vivaldi (that I have) has this "bug" where it seems to continually download, and the latest version of Vivaldi has addressed this issue??

Regardless, I have installed the latest version of Vivaldi (2.4.1488.38), and Vivaldi is STILL downloading something in the background!

    So I ask again.

What is Vivaldi downloading? Why is it downloading continuously? And can this (unwanted and annoying) downloading be stopped?

  • @meeshu Try Shift+Escape too see which tab/process is using the RAM and CPU cycles.

  • Shft + ESC confirms that Vivaldi browser is using the internet and is presumably downloading something(s)!

confirms that Vivaldi browser is using the internet

    Any extension loading in background?

  • No extension, nor anything else is being downloaded. Only the browser itself appears to be downloading. Only have three extensions and all are fully downloaded and installed I believe.

Using earlier versions of Vivaldi, and sometime ago, I did note that Vivaldi seemed to download in the background. However, the downloads usually stopped after about 30 ~ 45 minutes or so.

As of now, Vivaldi has been (background) downloading for a total of maybe 6 hours + and is still going!!??

@meeshu Vivaldi does not download in the background. Something on your system would appear to be using it for this.

  • @meeshu
Check Windows task manager for app with high network activity.
Vivaldi use network only for sync feature, do you use it?

    Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Sync checks for a need to download, repeatedly, but does not download over long periods of time. Download of synced data is quite fast and short. Upload of sync data is done slowly, tiny bits at a time.

  • No syncing being done.

The Network Activity tab under W7 Resource Monitor still shows that Vivaldi appears to be continually downloading something.

Although the system is a fresh install (after formatting partition on HDD), and I would not expect any malware to be present, I ran several programs to check for presence of any malware anyway.

Ran Rkill, then Malwarebytes, then AdwCleaner, and also ran FRST. According to the results of these scans, nothing of concern was found (no malware of any kind).

So what should be done now to determine the cause of this apparent continual downloading via Vivaldi?

By the way, I'm using Pale Moon browser to post replies, and there is no network activity going on in the background. So the issue is definitely related to Vivaldi.

  • @meeshu
No idea, there is download activity after start even sync is disabled but stop after a few seconds. Checked on Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro and Linux.
Did you download Vivaldi from https://vivaldi.com/download/ ?
Open private window and close other to exclude any extension.

    2.2.1388.37

Update to 2.4, older version have unfixed security issues.
Start Private Window only and check for a downloading process with tcpview to investigate Vivaldi is connecting which IPs.

  • Comments noted thanks.

I have already downloaded and installed version 2.4.1488.38 of Vivaldi as mentioned in my second post.

All Vivaldi browsers were downloaded directly from Vivaldi web site.

Even with lastest version of Vivaldi installed, Vivaldi continued to download in the background.

However! As of about two hours ago, Vivaldi has finally stopped downloading! So it seems at this time no further action is required by me to investigate and remedy (if possible) the cause(s) for the extended period of background downloading.

The question remains though as to WHAT Vivaldi was downloading, and why!?

Even with lastest version of Vivaldi installed, Vivaldi continued to download in the background.

Vivaldi fetches a database for malice domains and spellchecker dicts.
But hat should take less than a minute or faster (but i do not knwo your internet connection's speed).

And if you use Sync, Vivaldi sends/receives packets to bifrost.vivaldi.com

If you have more download in background, may be one of your extensions in Vivaldi causes this.

  • OK.

I'm on a Dial-Up connection, so the amount of data downloaded by Vivaldi is estimated to be 100 + MB !!!

The three extensions for Vivaldi have been used previously, and I don't recall Vivaldi downloading for so many hours previously either!?

    No Syncing being done either.

It appears that this is still a bit of a mystery as to why Vivaldi downloaded so much data!?

  • @meeshu
I think most users just do not realise that.
I have a 50 Mbit/s connection so after a few seconds the download is done.
    Test with a fresh profile:

Hm, only 1.1 MB not 100 for me with:
    Vivaldi 2.4.1488.38 (Stable channel) (64-Bit)
    Opensuse Tumbleweed x86_64
    CPU i7-3520M 8 GB
    GPU Intel HD4000
    xf86-video-intel 2.99.917-6.1
    KDE Plasma 5.54.5.11

    Still a mystery, mib

  • Thanks for the "test/experiment" installation of Vivaldi!

For some reason(s), the amount of (background) data downloaded by Vivaldi seems to be considerably more for me than for others!?

On earlier occasions, Vivaldi would download for at least 30 minutes and maybe up to an hour or so. The amount of data downloaded then would have been at least 10 MB!! But as mentioned before, the amount of data downloaded most recently was estimated to be at least 100 MB!! That is a HUGE amount of background data to download for whatever reason(s)!!??

@meeshu Background data download here (aside from the occasional sync and update pings and returns) is 0.00 MB. As I said earlier, I don't think Vivaldi is doing this. I think malicious software on your machine is USING Vivaldi to do this.
