How to separate work and play on the same PC
-
Is there a way to rename an existing profile? Couldn't find any

@amzin
chrome://settings/manageProfile

After having vivaldi reinstalled I thought about this feature. I came to the conclusion I would not use it for me:
I want all my data accessible at the same spots all the time, everything else would make me slower.
BUT: I will use it for "guests", that use my system (like wife, daughter, ...)

@pettern: I recently switched back to a Mac and started using Vivaldi. Is it possible to do this on a Mac? I created work and home accounts, but it defaults to my web browser for home in work and is rather distracting.
-
Does anybody uses profiles to separate work&home bookmarks but with one sync account? Or that isn't possible? Or maybe I want to use the feature wrong?
-
@enc0re Yes, I use four Vivaldi profiles, each with its own synchronization. That works great. It's like having four Vivaldi Each profile has its own settings, bookmarks, and extensions.
-
@stardepp It's like having 4 seasons of Vivaldi you mean
-
@npro Yeah, that's exactly what I meant.
-
@stardepp: And everything synced within one account?
edit: I made two profiles, both logged with same account. If I delete bookmark in one profile, it gets deleted on other also. That's not I want.
-
@enc0re No, you need to create a separate synchronization account for each profile. So you need a different email address, password and encryption password for each profile.
-
@stardepp I was asking that at the beginning :). Then this feature is not suitable for me. I don't want to have another sync account.

This was my initial reaction when they introduced multiple profiles - I was expecting that your single sync account allowed you to keep multiple profiles for easy set-up of e.g. personal/work accounts on new installs... but in fact for each new install you have to set up multiple profiles linked to multiple sync accounts instead.
It would work, but like you I prefer not to create a new sync account just to store some additional work bookmarks or whatever.
I did eventually find a use for the current system - my wife kept borrowing one of my corporate laptops (against company policy, I know)... I ended up adding her sync account to a second profile then making desktop thumbnails for "my Vivaldi" and "her Vivaldi" - that way she stopped polluting my history etc. :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:

If you don't want a 2nd sync account you could create 2 major categories in your bookmarks "Home", "Work" to put your stuff and use 2 different Speed Dials on your Startpage, that's the beauty of Vivaldi.

Well that's what I did, of course. It's fine - I can live with redundant links to my personal webmail on the main speed-dial when working and redundant work speed dial folders when I'm using the "home" PCs...

@pettern: can't the data be encrypted? With all the sensitive data that can be accessed through the browser, password locking seems as necessary as it is on phones.
-
@Spikey89 Passwords are encrypted at Vivaldi when using Vivaldi Sync:
-
@Spikey89 The data IS encrypted - in such a manner that it can only be read when logging in from the same OS profile that stored the data.
-
Just started playing with that as a means to have different sets of bookmarks and login data (work vs. personal stuff). Immediate disappointment struck me that I can't migrate settings like keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures. In this line of thought it would be nice if existing data could be migrated upon the creation of a new profile. In my case there was also the problem of not being able to import the data from the previously existing profile of the same Vivaldi stable installation since it's running (so I had to resort to importing from a snapshot I have synced with the same profile, then deleting part of the bookmarks).
Consider this as kind of a feature request - upon creating a new Vivaldi profile, present the user with tick boxes to choose what to carry over from an existing profile - and this might be settings, passwords, bookmark folders (as opposed to the whole bookmark tree) and so on. I believe this will mostly be the same scenario for many people - since it's the same OS profile, it can be assumed that it's the same person using the computer (as opposed to discerning based on a different OS profile, when it's most certainly about a different person and you wouldn't want to carry over that person's data - even if you technically could).

@ugly: For how much do you sell me your profile name?
