How to separate work and play on the same PC
-
We are online all the time – at work and at home. Often, our work and personal lives get too entangled. Here are some ideas on how to set up different work and personal profiles in Vivaldi.

Hi, please add a word about sync and multiple profiles to article and/or help pages.
Some user struggle over sync different profiles to a single user account, me too.
I managed this with adding a new account but you need a different recovery email address for each account.
mib2berlin sync mail > [email protected]
mib3berlin sync mail > [email protected]
mib4berlin sync mail > [email protected]
and so forth ...
But I don´t need another five email accounts.Cheers, mib

If for some reason you do not want to "check for updates", e.g. if you run stable and snapshot run in parallel, make sure you unset the checkbox in the settings after creating a new profile.
Additionally consider the use if the command line flag, if you want the keep the profiles really separate because the profiles are stored under different directories in ein main profile directory, but by use of the command line flag you can place it everywhere.
You can use it e.g. as a shortcut:
[path/to/Vivaldi.exe/] --profile-directory="[path/to/profile/directory]"
because if you ever have to reset the profile by deleting it, you can at least keep the other profile. -

Yeah, that's why I started that thread on sync a few weeks ago. I thought I could set up a "work" profile and it would automatically be synced everywhere through my MossMan Vivaldi account, but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.
I'm afraid I can't be bothered to duplicate everything (on all my machines) just so I can switch between quite similar profiles - the way it's been implemented is far too much work for the user, in my opinion.

Is there a way to make one of the profiles a default profile?
I haven't used profiles that much and I might have missed it, but it seems like Vivaldi will open using the profile that was used in the most recently closed window.
Basically, when I'm at work, I'd like to always have my 'work' profile open whenever I start a new instance of Vivaldi. But I like to keep my 'avoiding doing work' profile open a separate desktop so I can hide it from my boss and get back to it when I have free time. And if my 'avoiding doing work' profile is the last one I close then, then the next time I open Vivaldi, I don't get my 'work' profile. I would like to avoid accidentally opening up my 'avoiding doing work' profile when I bring the browser up.

This is a great new feature!
Nevertheless I really looking forward to have the lightweight version of this feature: session autosave. Within the same profile, I would like to switch to a new set of tabs, according to my current interest. Even in the same window. Sessions is great for this, but every time I have new tabs in a session or close tabs, I have to save the session. And I always have to choose a new name for this.
If session autosave would be implemented, I would not even think about other browsers. -
As long as I can't password protect my profiles (Master Password is better) then it doesn't really make a difference for me to use different profiles at home or work.
Simply using different folders for Bookmarks (Home & Work Folder) is enough for me. But a Master Password really gives me what I want: No one except me can access either profiles and I'm comfortable leaving my work PC just by closing Vivaldi since anyone who may start it has to enter a Password.

@ugly What OS are you on?
-
@olgaa: At work I have to use Windows 10.

I have been really hoping this feature would be implemented in Vivaldi. Thank you! I can now easily switch between the various AWS profiles I use at work, without constantly having to reauthenticate. That is awesome.
Is there a way to rename a profile? The existing profile is simply called "Person 1". I'd like to be able to change that.
Thanks for all your hard work!

@mikesigs search on the forum "rename a profile", this has been answered multiple times in the last days, even in the releases announcement blog posts.

@quhno: there's still a bug with the re-enabling auto-updater in combination with multiple profiles VB-37140

I know, I have confirmed it, but what can I do ...
... and there is a bug with profiles in general:
If you use e.g. the Guest Profile the Auto Updater gets activated for that version ... -
This is brilliant feature but I'm wondering if there's any keyboard shortcut to switch between profile? I've digging the help pages but no luck.
-
@ugly: The last open profile will be default. You can override this with using --profile-directory=<name>.
-
@neltherion: That would offer little security since anyone could still access they data inside the profile directory of your OS login. The secure way would be to use separate OS logins and switch between them. Applications will still continue running on each account (on Windows).
-
@sandalian: Not currently inside Vivaldi, no, but using the --profile-directory argument, you can do it on the OS level.

Hey there!
I have been really hoping this feature would be implemented. I use Vivaldi on my private and my work PC because it works just perfect. But could you please add the user profiles to the things that get synced over my Vivaldi account? I dont' want to have my private stuff mixed up with my work stuff. At first i thought that user profiles would do that for me but only if it's on the same PC.
Also i can't change the name of my first profile. It's called Profile1 and there is no way to change that.
Thanks for your work!

@fabianski
Hi, you have to set up a new Vivaldi account to separate privat from work data.
Change profile name in chrome://settings/manageProfile
Copy/paste in to the address field.Cheers, mib
