Solved Sync search engines
-
When freshly installing Vivaldi, the missing search engines and keywords is always surprising.
-
This much requested feature has been implemented in 5.3 Stable.
-
It is also annoying to set up/change search engines on several machines (work/home) separately.
-
Hi, until we wait for sync, there is a Mod to backup your search engines:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/35443/backup-search-engines
Cheers, mib

Votee for this!

An other anoyance is, i have like 35 special search sites added, ( cause i do development / ict ) i would like to be able to group-some by category ( now i need to scroll, ) i kinda did a dirty work-a-round by adding spacers ( going nowhere ) "https://." ex : --[ DevOps ]-------, --[ Databases ]-------, --[ Packages / Distro ]---- etc ... you'll get my drift.
-
@centralunitmainloginacc Nice idea. Yes my collection is also rather unwieldy
-
Now when we have Vivaldi Mobile this feature would be even more useful
-
@ROTFL yeah, just came here to ask for this function for exactly that reason - I wrote one of my own search key shortcuts in Mobile and than I was surprised it doesn't work...
-
I don't understand why search engines are not being synced. It is one of the fundamental features of the browser.
-
@mib2berlin thx for this mod. but this is just a workaround. the modifications need too much knowledge and too much manual work on a fresh installation.
I'm really wondering why there are not synced. its not my browser when I enter "y Brendan Kavanagh" and get a yahoo search result instead of youtube. and that it feels like my browser when I enabled synchronisation is the goal of synchronisation isn't it?

FWIW, the default search engine keywords do currently work in mobile. E.g. doing g foobar will search for foobar on Google, and e foobar will search it on Ecosia. It is really surprising and unexpected to me when the keyword disappears after typing it, but it does work at least.
-
please add this.
-
I only have nine, so I saved the URLs to a plain text file.
-
i'm also wondering, why are search engines not being synced?
it would be sooo useful to me! -

But you cannot add your own search engine on mobile, can you?

@felagund Yes, not yet.

I currently have a Vivaldi Notes item called search engines with all of them written down in markdown using this template:
## Template Nickname: `tmp` URL: `tmp`
That way I end up with an easy-to-read block like this where I can easily double-click to copy/paste into the settings tab:
YouTube
Nickname:
yt
URL:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%s
This is very much a workaround to hold me over (since notes sync with the browser) until this feature is implemented. I'm currently sitting on 8 custom engines that I regularly rely on across my devices but am always finding new and creative ways to interact with content on sites thanks to this awesome feature.
Keep up the great work!

Keep up the great work! It's a good solution at the moment

This issue is over a year old. I hope it's not too hard to implement. It would be very convenient to have it!
-
Actually much older than a year old.
This is just one small part of Sync More Features, which is a much older thread with over 50 votes, and already tagged as In Progress.
