[Profiles][Sync] Information in the profile icon and popup should reflect the sync information (VB-51073)
Could we also get the ability to keep a display name shown? My sync account has an awfully long name.
Also, the info and profile icon is not shown when managing profiles or viewing the popup from a different profile.
-
[New] Add an option to open the context search in a background tab “Settings → Search → Page Selection Search in Background” (VB-29927)
Is there no key combination to activate the feature?
I don't want to have the new search page in the background all the time.Do I have to create a new feature request?
-
So we can set up a sync account for each profile? Would it be possible to sync more profiles with one sync account?
The former is good if you share your computer with your family, but the latter would be ideal for home/work profiles of the same person.

I discussed this issue in a separate thread here.
Basically my initial confusion - and yours, I think - is because it's not made clear that the sync profile sits -inside- the user profile. Each user profile has its own set of data, including sync settings (which are off when you set up a new user).
That means that when you change to a new user profile sync is not active any more.
In your example, Person 1 is a user profile which is linked to sync profile "altcode" - but when you switch to Person 2 profile, it is not linked to any sync profile (so you just see "Person 2" in the top line).
I had assumed that sync was linked to the complete set of your browser user data - in other words, multiple user profiles can sit inside one sync profile. That is not the case - if you want multiple devices to have the same set of user profiles then you will have to set up as follows:
Device 1:
- set up Person 1
- create sync profile (e.g. "Mr. A") and link it
- set up Person 2 and switch to it
- create sync profile (e.g. "Mr. B") and link it
Device 2:
- set up Person 1
- link to sync profile "Mr. A"
- set up Person 2 and switch to it
- link to sync profile "Mr. B"
Now both devices have Person 1 showing as Mr. A and Person 2 showing as Mr. B - but Person 2 will not automatically sync as Mr. B when you set up the second device!
The user profiles and sync profiles are independent so you could even have something like Person 1 = Mr. B, Person 2 = Mr. A, Person 3 is unsynced, Person 4 = Mr. A again on the second device while still having Person 1 = Mr. A and Person 2 = Mr. B on the first device.

@mossman to me makes sense as it is, each profile has his own set of data and they don't see each other, so yeah, you basically have to setup your settings for each profile, including the sync settings.
For example if I have a guest profile at home for people visiting me and wanting to have a quick look at their gmail account etc, and then I want to sync my profile to the Vivaldi installed at my work PC, I for sure don't want to get the guest profile data synced on my work PC. -
Please do something with the horrible blurry text, I cannot use your browser. After 1-2 minutes, I give up, because my eyes don't cannot accept it.
I know, it is because the Blink engine, but please, please, ... -
@vlevi70 it's a problem on your PC for sure, no blurry text on my side.
-
@mossman What I meant with my post is that Person 1 does not show the appropriate info or icon when viewed from another profile (Profile 2 in this case) or through the Manage Profiles window.
You seem to want multiple profiles for one sync account.
-
@mossman Personally, I can't be bothered to set up multiple Vivaldi accounts and go through the trouble of linking multiple user profiles to multiple accounts on mutiple devices - so for me it's a waste of time!
When I first heard about it I thought: set up a second account for work and it will automatically appear on all my machines! But that's not how it works at all...
-
@mossman Perhaps there should be a distinction between profiles and accounts. Right now, adding a new profile only means adding a new account, so as of now: a profile is equal to an account. However, you seem to want it to work in differently. If I understood you correctly, you want profiles to be independent from accounts so that one account can have multiple profiles, so that one account can contain more than one profile. Is that correct?

Yes. And all this "accounts", "people", "users", "profiles" stuff is WAY too confusing!
For me it's only interesting if I have ONE Vivaldi sync account which itself contains multiple profiles... so I can install Vivaldi somewhere, do sync ONE TIME and then instantly switch between "work", "personal", "research" etc. with all associated bookmarks and settings.

But anyway, for that kind of privacy concern we have operating system logins...
-
@mossman In that case, maybe you should open a feature request where accounts and profiles are separated in such than:
-
An account stores and syncs profiles
-
A profile stores bookmarks, settings, extensions, cookies, browsing history, settings, etc.
