Vivaldi uses 80% CPU
-
I have enjoyed using Vivaldi (those vertical tabs are awesome!) for quite some time and have suggested it to several people I know.
I recently had to reformat my computer (2.8 GHz i3-3220T CPU with 16 GB RAM)) so upgraded from Win 8 Pro to Win 10 Pro at the same time. When I installed Vivaldi (2.2.1388.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit)), I noticed that it
was very slow. After 10 minutes, I couldn't use it! It wouldn't even close down properly using the X button, I had to use "Close Window" on the task bar.I thought there might have been a problem with the install so uninstalled it, rebooted, then reinstalled it. Same problem!
I took a look at Task Manager and found that Vivaldi was using 80% of my CPU! This is not how Vivaldi used to work! I have the exact same problem with Vivaldi on my laptop...
Every once in a while, I check Vivaldi and find the same thing occurs. I have just tried to use 2.3.1440.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit) with the same result.
Thanks very much,
John

@johnm243 Welcome to the forum, enjoy Vivaldi Browser.
Thanks for reaching out and sorry for the trouble.A new Vivaldi version is available and the issue is still present. If you have any extension installed, please disable them and restart.
Could you please post the native Vivaldi Task Manager?
-
@lamarca I disabled the three extensions and restarted. My Vivaldi is uptodate.
The screenshots below of the Vivaldi Task Manager include the tabs that I have always opened Vivaldi with:

@johnm243
Hi, check Vivaldi task manager with Shift+Esc, may you get more information wich tab or extension generated this.
Btw. you have 40 task of Vivaldi but only 5 from Firefox.Cheers, mib
-
Thanks for the Native Task Manager. Did the CPU usage get better after turning the extensions off?
-
@johnm243 There are some tweaks to improve Vivaldi performance without hogging resources. They might or not as we intend.

It looks it's Vivaldi Task Manager
-
Thanks @mib2berlin. I have used Vivaldi for years with the exact same tabs open. This issue only started when I moved from Windows 8.0 Pro to Win 10 Pro over the holidays.
Thanks also @lamarca. No, the CPU Usage was just as bad after. In fact, I had to close Vivaldi in the Task Bar, then open it again in order to send the response. Fortunately, Vivaldi remembered what I had written and had also kept the screen shots I had pasted it!
What "tweaks" are you talking about?
John

@johnm243 Ouch. Forgot to mention Block Content (I am forced to use one of them - uBlock) should not to be off.

Does it happen frequently? In case you are also having crashes, let us know.
RAM Usage and Temperature? After shuting down have you notice if there are still Vivaldi processes runningAs for the tweaks, we can see it later
I have serious High CPU Usage.
-
@lamarca thanks again. As far as I know, I am not using any tweaks. Here is my command line:
"C:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe" --flag-switches-begin --flag-switches-end --save-page-as-mhtml
Re closing using Task Bar: after about 5 to 10 minutes, I am using 100% CPU. So the only way to close is using the Task bar. As it always goes to 100% CPU, Vivaldi is totally unusable to me so no crashes due to it.
Re RAM: as you can see from the Task Manager screen shots, Vivaldi is using nearly 3 GB of RAM on my system.
Re processes after shutdown: not sure, I will look at that some time when I have time to test Vivaldi again.

@johnm243 Are you running any extensions? And when you changed to Win10 - did you change machines?
-
-
-
@johnm243 And did you install Vivaldi newly on the new Win10 drive without using your prior profile folder?
-
@Ayespy His CPU is at 100%, unless you have a secret, I tried all the options, except the Stand Alone.
Edit: I lost his comment about the HDD.

and I figured it was time to install Win 10!
That's the right decision. Please, let us how did you manage to solve big issue.
Cheers
-
@lamarca thanks. I will try that uninstall. FYI, the computer only runs at 100% CPU when I run Vivaldi. The rest of the time, the computer runs normally...
@ayespy re "And did you install Vivaldi newly on the new Win10 drive without using your prior profile folder?": yes, I was able to recover some important config info from my Macrium Reflect image backups, but other than config info, all installs were new.

@johnm243 You are welcome.
What you must backup

@lamarca thanks again. I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted. Same thing: uses from 30% to over 50% CPU, over 2.3 GB memory.

You are welcome.

I am not sure, did you fix the resource hog?

@lamarca said in Vivaldi uses 80% CPU:

Vivaldi is the resource hog, has not been fixed.
