A guide to the Address Field drop-down

How does the browser decide what results show up when you start typing in the Address Field of Vivaldi? Let’s take a closer look at the Address Field drop-down.

@jonmc I spotted a typo:
when you when you start

@pesala: Fixed, thanks!

I will grant you that the Vivaldi address bar looks the best out of all the browsers.
But it's also the buggiest out of all the other browsers unfortunately. I feel its slowly being better but there are still issues with it auto correcting what I typed to something else, and not navigating when I press enter unless I keep mashing the button.
You also missed a couple of features in this blog post :
- if you click on the drop down arrow without typing anything, you can see your typed history in chronological order
- you can change how the current URL is displayed by using the setting to show or hide the full url
-
I use the address bar for searching and it works great, for everything from web to torrent sites
I'd love to see a weight system, like in Firefox, to control the order of what appears when you type, search suggestions, bookmarks, history etc.
Also on a related historical note, wasn't Opera the first browser to add custom search engines where you could also search from the address bar? I'm a bit unclear on this as I never used other browsers for years and years but pretty sure it was.
-
There is a very annoying bug with the adressbar. If you search for something and get search suggestions they can be unreachable with the keyboard, because if you press down (or up) you'll reach "typed history" or "browsing history", and then the search suggestions will disappear.
-
@lonm: Actually, I had written more on the Typed History drop-down (and other features) as well. For the sake of length, though, decided to focus only on what happens when typing in the Address Field So, more posts to come!
-
@pathduck: Talking about this post with QA we found a few areas for improvement, customizing the order (weighting) of these different kinds of results being one of them. Could very well come in a future update.
Not sure on the historical front, maybe @ruari knows about that one?
-
@mrmamen: I can confirm this, but I haven't noticed it before.
Another bug(?) occures, when you want to use the typed history of a recent search. E.g. I used the adress bar an hour ago to search for "Vivaldi" (and typed "g Vivaldi"). When I want to search for "Vivaldi Browser" now and start typing "g Vi..." the entry "g Vivaldi" appears, but when I choose that entry, the whole URL is copied to the address field (https://www.google.com/search?q=vivaldi) instead of "g Vivaldi". So in order to search for "Vivaldi Browser" I have to manually add "%20Browser" and that's cumbersome...
-
But how do I stop the autocomplete in the address bar? It always ends up auto-completing a URL I typed years ago... The mechanism is broken, at least for me. Auto-suggest something, fine; but don't do the whole URL, offer just the domain and if I get to the end of the domain by manually typing, THEN offer a full URL... It's pretty useless as it is.

@gryzor
Hi, there a some settings you may look into:
Disable Typed History
Disable Autocomplete
Delete entries in the dropdown menu, right side cross.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin Yes, I know these; the point is, I don't necessarily want to disable them, they're useful, but the implementation is bad...
By the way, what is the last suggestion of yours? Which dropdown menu?
Thanks for the reply!

@gryzor
If you type a search term or address in the address field it show typed history.
You can delete each entry manually. It may a lot of work if you have many entries.Cheers, mib
-
Arggh. How do I delete entries from this. Do I have to delete my browser history because one time I make a typo?
-
@dcrob01 If you hover the entry in the dropdown, you will see an 'X' at the end of the highlighted line. Click that.

I loved learning from the article and really enjoy how the people who keep vivaldi running are super receptive and embracing of their community. I did want to say something real quick:
There should really be an option to remove or hide the history category from the address field drop down. I don't/should not have to clear my browsing data each time to eliminate the huge amount of results that come up.
Or at least an option to limit the history results to an amount less than what is shown. -
Indeed, it's kind of ridiculous to return ancient results... Although, I have to adming, especially when googling stuff from the address bar it's mildly funny to see what I was looking for aeons ago
-
Hi. Is there a way to limit the number of suggested links for each category?
E.g.: three for typed, three for history and three for bookmarks
Thanks -
Great article! Is there a way to change the key bindings for navigating the drop-down menu items? I'd like to use Control-N and Control-P instead of the arrow keys if possible. I'm a huge dan of Vivaldi's all-around customisability, but this particular customisation is one that I really miss. Thanks!

I wish the results of the browser history in the DropDown would be sorted by page views not by name.
