Vivaldi crashes when opening in new tab
-
As an example, I am searching for something on duckduckgo. I press on the link that I want to load and when it starts loading, I press on another link and try to open it in a new tab. Same if I try to open it in a background tab.
I made a .gif to demonstrate.

Try without extensions in Private Window. If that works one of your extensions causes this crash.
-
Same here. Every new tab is a crash. But, if you use the mouse command to open in background, you can open it.
but is stressing me out.
-
no fix yet

@brunorosik
Hi, did you tried Private Window?
It is without Extensions if you not manually enable it.Cheers, mib
-
@brunorosik We do not know how to reproduce your crash with 2.3.1440.41.
Explain more.

I am having the same issue since the update the other day. Opening a new tab via pushing the "+" button kills the browser window. I tried in a Private window, same thing happens. When I did it in the Private window, I was on a Youtube page and even though visually the browser window was dead, the Youtube video still seemed to be playing as I could still hear the audio. Hopefully that information is of some use. I am a web developer and use Vivaldi as my preferred browser for work, so, I would really prefer not to have to jump ship

@faaaaq We need some more information.
Crash logs and a descriptive report.
Please read how to Report a bug for Vivaldi carefully and then report the bug to Vivaldi bugtracker.
-
A temporary work around that solved it for me was to check the option "Blank page" under the "New Tab Page" setting.
Can't say I spent much time trying to resolve why it was happening.
-
Just upgraded and it happens for me as well. If I use the + button to open a new tab, I get a gray browser window with the Vivaldi logo. Force quit is the only thing that works.
It only happens when "Open new tab" is set to "Start page". If I use "Home page" or "Blank page" like escolar wrote, it will work as usual, so I assume it has to do with the coding of the Start page.
-
@blackeagle And which startpage is set in settings? Do you use any extensions?
-
Same for me.
When opening a new tab, either in normal or private window, I get the full vivaldi window to get grey with vivaldi logo in the middle.
I believe it's not a crash but a problem when drawing speed dial from a new tab because:
1- window title shown in titlebar is "speed dial" and when closing the window in private mode, i do get the closing window confirmation. (see screenshot)
2- if i change speed dial by something else (black page or a website) when opening a new tab, there's no problem
3- if I access manually to vivaldi://startpage only an empty grey page is shown
-
Exactly the same thing. Unstalling and installing 2.3.1440.41 works like a charm. 2.3.1440.45 causes the same kind of crash every time I click new tab.

submitted a bug report.
Issue reference is VB-49396

Got an answer from dev team (yup, that was quick!). I'm sharing it with you:
Hello there. Have you deleted the standard speed-dial bookmarks? We currently have a bug where if your speed dial isn't there, and your new tab page is speed dial, it just goes grey like that. Try changing your new tab page in Settings - Tabs - New Tab Page from start page to homepage. then it should work until we can get a fix going. Hope this helps. Regards,

@Albirew Thanks for sharing this

@Albirew Thanks for sharing! I had this same issue as well.

@Gwen-Dragon
I have the same problem too. "when clicking the open a new tab", whole browser crashes. it all started after this update...plus won't show start up page. settings are ok! startup page is trying to show but vanishes suddenly!! same with web history...
-
@Albirew homepage won't work for me. only blank page as a new tab works for me.
