Open new tabs in background by default
-
The issue
I'm annoyed and sick of the way Vivaldi opens new tabs in the foreground since years of quick-flick opening new tabs in other browser has been deeply rooted in my habits now.
What I'd like to do
I simply want to make the Open link in new tab result in opening a new tab in the background.
I couldn't care less about the Open link in new tab in foreground option, therefore any help in guiding me in modifying the right-click context menu would be appreciated. -
@UtkarshVerma
You could use some of the following:- make a middle click on the link
- define a mouse gesture for this action in Settings --> Mouse --> click on the plus to generate a new gesture --> define what the action should be --> define a gesture
- open a link in a new tab by "Ctrl +leftclick" a link (to open in a new window is "Shift+leftclick")
EDIT: Yes I know this isn't a default leftclick, an option for this would be great, but it still is a lot more timesaving than using a rightclick menu for this
EDIT 2: I forgot about one option, you can also define a keyboard shortcut you can press when you hover your mouse over a link to open it in a new background tab.
Settings --> Keyboard --> open the section "Page" --> place a shortcut of your liking for "Open Link in new Background Tab (Over a Link)" -
I don't want alternatives since I've got highly used to right click and then Open in new tab option in Chrome and Firefox and doing anything else is very uncomfortable for me now.

@UtkarshVerma In this case you should post a feature request, for those requests other forum users can vote. So a suggestion gets more attention from the developers and the chances increase that it will be implemented (please note there is of course no guarantee).
The feature request section is here: https://forum.vivaldi.net/category/113/feature-requests
Please read the instructions in the subforum before posting a request. -
@zaibon Those take lots of time to be actually implemented and I've seen several requests already regarding this topic. I've posted this here because I'd like to know which files(the software files for vivaldi) I need to modify in order to modify the context menu which appears on right-clicking.

@UtkarshVerma Vote for the existing feature request.
Maybe you mean the Open Link in New Background Tab item on the menu.
Allow Editing of Menus is still far away.
There is currently no option but to use one of the many suggested workarounds.
This is one of the FAQ
- Right-click, Open in New Background Tab
- Ctrl+click
- Middle-click
- Mouse Gesture, Open Link in Background Tab (Over a Link)
-
@Pesala Ok, I'll upvote in the meantime. However, I think I'd switch back to my old browser until this is implemented.
I still don't expect much because those requests are ancient if you ask me
-
Allow Editing of Menus is now done, but Allow Editing of Context Menus is not done yet.
-
How is this not implemented yet? Just HOW?
It is the default of other browsers. Why make it different and not even give an option to change when you have so many useless options implemented already compared to this one... -

Read the Feature Request Thread from page one, especially the reply from the Community Manager that I quoted, and you might understand. It is now tagged as Pipeline, which means that is planned, but not currently being worked on.
With nearly 2,900 feature requests, and a small team, those needed by few users or difficult to implement may have to wait for a long time. Wherever you see that a feature is tagged as In Progress, it may get done this year rather than next.

How about the other browsers being wrong? many people prefer to open link in foreground as default. You already have multiple ways to open tabs in background. It's not that you can't. Just learn how THIS browser works.

If I right-click a link, the item at the top of the context menu is "Open link in new tab".

you are making this quote up, I never wrote that in this thread.

I don't see what this has anything to do with what I actually wrote.

That’s an exciting development.

In Opera 12.18, the default for the link context menu is:
- Open Link (reuse current unless the target is new window)
- Open in Background Tab
- Open in Background Window
I customised the menu to remove the first item because it just duplicates what happens with Left Click.
I removed the Open in New Window items, because I rarely open new windows
I added an item to open links in a Private Tab
I added a series of items to open the link in other browsers: -
