[Question] Change Taskbar-Icon for different Profiles?
-
Hi,
I hope I am in the correct category. I have a portable Vivaldi installation and running multiple Profiles. I start the different instances with e.g. vivaldi.exe --profile-directory="Profile 1" inside a batch file (with different icons - for the windows start menu).
My Problem is that in the Windowas Taskbar all the instances have the same (red) icon.
I tried to replace all the icons I found in the Profile directory:\User Data\Default\Vivaldi.ico \User Data\Default\Web Applications\_crx_mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli\Vivaldi.ico \User Data\Default\Google Profile.ico
... but with no effect. Change the icon of the vivaldi.exe file is not possible - I think? And I need multiple exe-files?
I am running Vivaldi 2.2.1388.37 (portable) with Windows 10
Thanks

First of all, there's no portable version of Vivaldi. There's a standalone version, which isn't shared with other users and the profile directory is contained within the installation folder. But it's not portable per se. It's a common misconception.
As to your question: you can change the icon on the taskbar, but it will revert back to the default application's icon while the program is running (and go back to the custom one, once it's closed). Here's how to change it:
- Click
[RMB]
on the pinned icon. - Click
[RMB]
on the Application name (eg. "Vivaldi") while holding[SHIFT]
. - Go to properties.
- Change the shortcut's icon to your liking.
- Go to Task Manager.
- Relaunch the File Explorer (
explorer.exe
).
To change the app's icon permanently (eg. when the app is running) you'd have to prepare your own
.exe
file for that app, I'm afraid... - Click

Hi @pafflick ,
Thank you for your answer. I have now managed to get my own icon by replacing theVivaldi.ico
in the folderUser Data\Profile 1\Web Applications\_crx_mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli
. It does not work the same way for Profile 2!? Also if I touch (or remove) the fileVivaldi.ico.md5
, the icon is reset back to the default icon after a new start of the browser. Do you know what is theVivaldi.ico.md5
for? And can I create such a file for my own icons?
And a little bit OT: does the standalone Version of Vivaldi saves settings outside the "Install Folder" (e.g. registry)?
Thanks -

Are you sure about that? I tried replacing that file with a custom icon and it didn't change anything, anywhere.

Since it's a md5 it could be a checksum of the icon file, but that's just my guess...

It shouldn't, but it might. I use only standalone installations of Vivaldi on my PC and I noticed wild appearances of some profile data folders within the
%appdata%
and%localappdata%
directories. I haven't checked the registry. -

Yes.
I also figure out why some Profiles work and some dont. I use the tool DisplayFusion for the Multi-Monitor-Taskbar (and other Multi-Monitor functions). On the "DisplayFusion-taskbar" (2nd and 3rd monitor) there is always the default icon for all instances. On the Windows-Taskbar (main monitor) the icons are correct.
I replaced the icons during the running instance of the browser. And sometimes you have to restart the browser multiple times - but after that, the icons shown correct. But do not change the md5 file!@iampowder said in [Question] Change Taskbar-Icon for different Profiles?:

and aCrahpad

Well, I've googled that Chrome shows different taskbar icons for different profiles (it uses profile icons that look like main application icon with smaller profile picture in the corner).
But due to some stupid Chrome bug/limitation it only does it when taskbar button labels are hidden (I always enable small buttons and labels because switching between multiple windows is much easier with this old style).
And it still doesn't allow setting custom profile icon, and it is also quite sad because it isn't usable to run multiple profiles at the same time when they all have the same or almost the same icon.
