Audio cuts out for all tabs on browser after various amount of time for unknown reason
-
Hello all,
I'm not sure why this occurs, but no matter how many tabs I have open, my browser will globally stop producing audio. I then need to close our of Vivaldi and restart the browser to get back to being able to hear audio. This is especially difficult on pages such as Facebook because once I restart the browser, I've lost the particular post I was on if I was just scrolling through my timeline, so I have to hunt for the post in order to listen to what I couldn't listen to due to Vivaldi spontaneously cutting out the audio. Mind you, this does not occur on any other browser or program on my computer.
Is there a known issue here? Is it something in my Vivaldi settings that could be causing this issue?
Thanks for any information that can help me with this problem.

p.s. I have 16 gig of memory and plenty of hard drive space. I also have an i5 processor. There is no hardware reason I could see that could cause this problem.

First, thank you for your reply. Let me go about getting the information you requested.
Vivaldi version: 2.2.1388.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit) Revision: 5234034d19b85dcd9a03b164ae89d04145d8368-refs/branch-heads/3578@{#897}
Windows version: Windows 10 Home 64-bit -1809 Build: 17763.253
Power Management: I am at an "always on" setting for all devices with nothing set to go into sleep mode on any device.
Intel chipset drivers and other possible pertinent information:
Motherboard Manufacturer - Dell Inc. Model - 0XJ8C4 (SOCKET 0) Version - A00
Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model Skylake
Chipset Revision 07
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model Z170
Southbridge Revision 31I am pretty diligent about maintaining my chipset drivers by installing them after they've been in out for about a month to insure there aren't many people who've reported issues with driver updates. I gone to Intel Driver & Support Assistant (Intel DSA) to insure my drivers are up to date. A new wireless, bluetooth and Rapid Storage Technology driver were published three days ago and needed updated (which I've now done) but no chipset drivers themselves have been ignored and are up to date.
Audio Drivers: (Possible pertinent information) I am a musician and therefore I utilize an atypical sound device. It is a Focusrite Scarlett that basically utilizes ASIO4ALL drivers. here is the information regarding the drivers associated with that:
Focusrite USB Audio
Driver Provider
Focusrite Audio Engineering Ltd.
Driver Version
4.36.5.612
Driver Date
1/9/2018
Device Id
FOCUSRITEUSB\AUDIO&ADAPTER\1&2F4F0163&0&ID:0000000012358205I hope this helps give information that will either help me solve this problem, or will open up a support task. One last thing regarding the audio drivers. Focusrite is one of the primary audio devices for musicians who utilize their computers for playing both live music or for recording purposes.
Please let me know if this helps in any way.-Digicoma

@Digicoma said in Audio cuts out for all tabs on browser after various amount of time for unknown reason:

There was a report earlier, but seems that was a problem with Windows & Realtek Drivers
And another related to Twitter
However, you don't mention the problem being site specific or time (delay) related.
Mind you, this does not occur on any other browser
Have you checked another chromium based browser?
Have you tested Vivaldi without extensions (depending on your settings private/incognito window may be useful for this)? -
I have not had my stated issue with Chrome itself. I really don't use any other Chromium based browsers, I have Edge and I also have Firefox, but they get minimum usage and obviously aren't Chromium based.
I have not tested Vivaldi without extensions. That is an interesting idea and I will use my browser without extensions the coming day and see if the issue occurs. I will report back on the results of this test.
Thanks again for the idea!

After having run Vivaldi by starting with Vivaldo.exe --disable-extensions for about 45 minutes I ran into my first problem. The browser was behaving normally regarding audio playback on various web pages when I'd opened up Facebook. I scrolled through a few posts in my timeline and had played videos with audio on perhaps for or five different selections. I had gone to another tab on Vivaldi and spent a few minutes reading with no audio on any tab. Then I came back to Facebook, scrolled down a bit more on my timeline and tried to play a video. No audio was produced. I tried three or four other videos all with the same result. This last result I left running and I opened a new tab for YouTube to see if the problem was hitting all my tabs throughout Vivaldi. The video I chose on YouTube played it's audio correctly, so I switched tabs back to Facebook which still was running the last video I'd set up. As soon as I clicked to the Facebook Tab, the audio was running again.
This was different then when I was running Vivaldi with extensions before. In the past, the only way I could get audio playing on any Vivaldi tab was to close out Vivaldi and reopen it.
I will continue to rub Vivaldi without extensions to see if there are any other notable issues. I will check in throughout the day and see if anyone has anything they'd like me to try or observe. Thanks for your ideas and help.

My only thought would be for them to purchase the audio device. In the US it's only about $130.00 There are more expensive versions of the device as well as less. Besides that there are quite a few more audio devices that all use ASIO4ALL as the primary sound driver. I know it says in my device settings that it's a driver specific to Focusrite, but it's is actually the ASIO4ALL driver. Now I can't say for sure that it's not tweaked specifically to Focusrite products, but when other music software identifies the driver, it is detected as ASIO4ALL.
In regards to your other question, I have not tried reinstalling Vivaldi, nor have I done a reset of my browser profile. I've never done anything like that since I started using Vivaldi, and I have to admit it I would rather not do that. I would do that if there was nothing else I could try; but I'd like to know Vivaldi developers or their QA had taken a look into it and maybe could either state what their position is on what to do, or to even state this is a sound driver we haven't tested with (if that's even the issue), and it may be awhile until we can get to this issue. Again, I'm not saying I flatly refuse to uninstall and reset the browser profile; but I'm hoping maybe I could get some word from them as to either their direct advice, or that they plan to look into it, etc. Do you think that is too much to ask? I don't want to be rude in any way as I really appreciate this browser, and am glad to be a part of the community. I'm also thankful that people like you have been so attentive to my issue. It's really nice to be a part of a group that cares about the user experience of others.

@Digicoma Another thing that might be contributing to your sound cutting out is the WebUSB support in the Chromium code. It periodically enumerates USB devices on your system and some buggy device drivers don't respond well to this. Try going to
chrome://settings/content/
and inUSB devices
, click the toggle switch to change the setting to "Do not allow any sites to access USB devices". -
Wow! I will do that right away and report back in the next 24 hours as to any difference I might find after applying the switch!
Thank you!

@Digicoma Good luck. You mentioned that you didn't have any problems with Chrome, so disabling WebUSB may not help at all since Chrome would have done the same thing. Regardless, it won't hurt to try this workaround.
You also mentioned that this triggers on Facebook, so it could also be a problem with the Windows media decoders not playing nicely with your sound card. If this is the case, then I would expect that you'd run into the same problem if you play the problematic video with Edge... that is if Facebook serves Edge with an identically-encoded media stream.
-
I went to the USB devices section you mentioned and was about to toggle the switch, but it said beneath the toggle dialog: No USB devices found.
I'm not sure what to make of that. All sound does get processed through that USB device...
Still, I'll see if it makes any difference.

I've never tried Facebook on Edge. I'll give it a shot and see if anything occurs. I'll report back on it.

-
@Digicoma The problem would not necessarily be that you have a device that's recognized/supported by WebUSB... rather, it's if you have a buggy device driver that doesn't react well when the WebUSB code polls the USB subsystem looking for devices.
-
@xyzzy
Interesting. Well, if that's the case it's likely that it's out of Vivaldi's hands. Still, I'm going to test on Edge tomorrow and see if anything negative happens. It will be interesting to see what occurs.
Since I've not seen this behavior in Chrome though, I'm inclined to believe that the issue is confined to Vivaldi. We'll see what happens, and I'll let you know.-Digicoma

@Digicoma If you have a link to a Facebook (or any other) video that breaks audio on your system, file a bug so this can be investigated further. Best of luck with your troubleshooting!

Im having a similar issue where USB audio doesnt work with any chromium based browsers.
If anyone has made any progress with this I'd appreciate any info. -
