Vivaldi UI is slow over time

Re: [Too long to start with many tabs](slow operation)
As a power user operating many tabs (50~80), I have lag/hang symptoms.
Opening the browser with my last session takes a while, it's faster now, but there is a symptom that persists.
After opening tabs doing work reading etc AND then closing them. After a while, the UI start hanging for a few seconds on every page change. It hangs more on certain websites like ebay, amazon, but overall, it is generalized.
Restarting the browser (closing and continue previous session) start again smoothly. Note that half of of the many tabs that I keep are not opened during these restart lapses. Most of lag seem to come from new tabs, even if they have been closed. So I don't think the slowdown is necessarly caused by the old tabs kept in the session.
This looks like a memory/thread leak or problem similar to this pattern.
ps: once the lag is getting i try removing many tabs that are old and dont need anymore, but it is "too late", i have to restart to recover the performance

@gagaboul Hello gagaboul,
did you ever use the Hibernate Background Tabs function (right click on the tab to have the context menu)?
I had the same problem and, since a few months, a regularly use that function to decrease the memory usage (see example below from task manager) :I hope this helps...

I have the same problem, sometimes it lags for seconds when changing tabs, or scrolling on some sites. CPU usage is not rising during the lags, and I have more than enough memory. So I am pretty sure it is the browser.

I have completly same problem. More And more often.
EDIT: I'm using Vivaldi 2.3.1420.4

I also have this problem. For some reason, Vivaldi is getting slower and slower at loading tabs. If I'm trying to open a url, I can:
- copy it out of Vivaldi
- open chrome
- paste it and
- load it
before Vivaldi catches up.
Vivaldi 2.2.1388.34 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Windows 10 v1803 -
I am having this problem as well. In my case, I noticed it only after updating to Vivaldi 2.3.1440.41 from the previous stable version (I have a similar number of tabs open at the same time as always). Vivaldi will gradually get slower and slower until I either close it or it crashes. Interestingly, when it crashes I have not seen an error message from Windows about it.

Pretty sure Vivaldi is not trying to slow down their browser however, it uses a bit more ram than chrome (of course it has some things added to it and different ui which can explain this)
also chromium browser's really like to eat ram especially because they virtualize the tabs for security reasons which for example Firefox doesn't do and that's why Firefox is better with ram usage.
however there are a lot of flags and settings that you can change to enhance the performance.
here are some that i suggest you try.vivaldi://flags/#automatic-tab-discarding - discards background tabs out of memory when on low memory (if you click them they load back into memory)
vivaldi://flags/#ignore-gpu-blacklist - ignore's unsupported hardware
vivaldi://flags/#enable-draw-occlusion - doesn't draw stuff that shouldn't be drawn.
vivaldi://flags/#enable-gpu-rasterization - Use GPU to rasterize web content
vivaldi://flags/#enable-quic - uses google's quic protocol based on udp which is faster than udp or tcp (mainly used by google sites if enabled.) -

Why is Hibernate Background Tabs allways deactivated when PC comes out of the sleep mode ?
If I set it I cannot babysit it anymore all the time.
Sometimes I set it and after 5 minutes of using Vivaldi it is deactivated. I really, really do not get this option. Seems as I need to click on every tab separate to activate it. Then name it "Tab" not "Tabs". -
I have noticed a similar slowing down over time. Sometimes interacting with GUI elements can take several seconds, sometimes it is instantaneous. To me it seems to be cpu-usage related. According to the windows task manager after opening a few tabs vivaldi consistently uses ~12-13% CPU which for me coincides with one CPU thread (i.e. 1/8th of the total). In the performance tab I can also see that the CPU is kept at a consistently high frequency state, and cannot throttle down. In the vivaldi task manager, it seems that "background page: vivaldi" is the culprit, I don't know how to get rid of it however as it is not tied to a specific tab... Maybe there is some UI element getting stuck in an infinite loop after a few tabs are opened?

ShowboxThe GPU tweaks only make sense if you have a dedicated GPU (as in a gaming card).
thats what I thought because I have "Enable GPU rasterization", "Disabled" so it doesn't effect rendering of the page. My PC has a built in video chip not a dedicated video card, so I turned off GPU settings since it probably can't handle all the separate commands. HTH

Confiremd in 2.3.1440.48 64-bit version, Windows 10, 16 GB RAM
To reproduce just open one tab with a lot of logic on the front side (for example Outlook online), work normally in other tabs. After a few minutes the entire UI will begin lagging. Gradually more and more. -
@varabi
I can verify lagging with Outlook online and 4-5 tabs open on:Opensuse Tumbleweed x86_64
CPU i7-3520M 8 GB
GPU Intel HD4000
xf86-video-intel 2.99.917-6.1
KDE Plasma 5.13.5.11
Vivaldi 2.4.1455.4 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit)It lags even writing this message or work on notes, mark text and so forth.
Never had this before, good find.Cheers, mib
EDIT: Closing Outlook online give power back. -
I have returned to Vivaldi after taking a break due to similar performance issues, I love this browser, however, these issues make it very hard
-
Just following up on my previous post to say that, like other users I have noticed this in particular with Outlook online (and also iCloud webmail, which I assume does a similarly heavy amount of scripting?).
-
@redheadedmonk do you still have a mechanical Hard Drive in the PC? if there's too many operations, it'll slow down everything...
-
@derekpittx Press Shift+Escape to view Vivaldi’s task manager. Look for any processes that are taking a lot of CPU cycles.
The GPU process will restart automatically if you end the task, and will then probably use less RAM.

same issues here... changing tab is a nightmare after a while...
I am tempted to return to edge or chrome... very unpleasant... -
Same issue I'm experiencing. I'm a web dev who likes to research docs all the time and during my session I'm close to a 100 tabs. Switching and especially closing them is borderline unusable. I have the close macroed to a mouse side button and I have to mentally count how many I want to close, then push the button that many times, then wait and see. Vivaldi has become slower over time. I only began using it for the vertical tabs when a Firefox broke some older extensions like tree style tab but I'm also tempted to switch to something else.
