Systemd, kernel, or Vivaldi?

  • I've been investigating a recent full-freeze my primary pc experienced a few days ago. There's a lot going on behind the scenes atm, package-wise, in the Arch/Manjaro eco-system, with recent systemd & kernel updates being implicated in widespread user reports of various problems. Hence i've been keeping an eye on my journal over recent days, & am curious about these entries from yesterday. Vivaldi-Snapshot is "always" running, as usual, but i was not expecting to see it feature so prominently in the journal entries. I don't know enough about this to interpret if it has become an innocent bystander in a deeper [possible] kernel / scheduler / systemd problem, or alternatively if V itself is causal. Btw, being yesterday's timestamp, the V-SS version running then was 1387.4. So far there's no entries with today's timestamp, which is with 1388.6. Note; these are samples / extracts -- there's actually vastly more entries of this type in the journal.

PS: Hmmm, i just can't seem to get the hang of how to use codeboxes inside spoilers, in this forum. It's easy for me in the Manjaro forum.

  • @Steffie No new journal entries of this nature, yesterday & today [so far].

Systemd is pretty nice unlike many users think. I added two lines on my cronjob

    1. systemd-analyze --> Boot performance
    2. systemd-analyze blame

@Steffie said in Systemd, kernel, or Vivaldi?:

@Steffie No new journal entries of this nature, yesterday & today [so far].

  • @lamarca Thank you, but afaics all your info is a tangent, not addressing my post. I'm not asking for guidance on using systemd, nor journal, nor optimising my boot times. I am asking if anyone knows of any active bugs extant in Vivaldi-Snapshot that might generate journal error messages such as i posted.

  • Maybe it is related to the EXT4 Corruption Issue On Linux 4.19
    https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-4.19-EXT4-Issue-Likely-MQ

  • @Stardust Many thanks. I would like to imagine you've hit the nail on the head, but atm i'm still not so sure:

    1. This BLK-MQ Scheduler issue has been getting lots of airtime in the Manjaro forum [probably lots of other distros too].
    2. Already i had read [before your Phoronix links, but for which i am still very grateful to you] the Devs' conclusion that the symptom arose if using MQ rather than SQ, but specifically with Scheduler option None.
    3. Manjaro kernels 4.18.x - 4.19.x using SQ-BFQ & MQ-deadline have given me total system freezes. I have never used MQ-none.
    4. Manjaro kernels 4.19.x using SQ-CFQ had no problems for me.
    5. My inclination had been to return my Scheduler to SQ-CFQ, but once i saw all the recent Vivaldi entries in the journal i felt it best to first check with Vivaldi people.

UPDATE: Still no new Vivaldi entries in my kernel error journal; last one now 3 days ago. Given V-SS has been in continual usage, it's now decidedly looking like V is not after all implicated in the bigger freeze picture i suspect.

  • There's been no more of those specific Vivaldi systemd journal entries since 6 Dec. Must just have been a random sunspot, or the wind blowing from the NNE at just the wrong velocity...

With the latest Manjaro update applied yesterday i'm now running kernel 4.19.8 which is supposed to have fixed a bad recent bug [which was still present in my 6/12 incident's 4.19.6]; let's see what transpires.
