PUPs included with new update
-
After updating to 2.1.1337.36, Malwarebytes 3.0 informed me that it was blocking some outgoing programs. It seems Vivaldi also installed Easyspeedtest and WatchTV on my machines. Go to Tools, Extensions and remove them both!
-
@topcat7736 There would not have been auto-installed by Vivaldi.
Some installers for other programs also bundle chrome extensions to the system itself. Vivaldi would have enabled these, as that's what system-wide installed extensions are supposed to do.
You should figure out what program is installing PUPs on your system.
-
easyspeedtest is being blocked by Malwarebytes 3.0 saying it is a PUP attempting to get onto the internet. These programs were suddenly on multiple computers after each was updated to 2.1.1337.36 and not before!
-
@topcat7736 It's possible these were installed on your computer at some point in the past and during the update procedure vivaldi scanned for system-installed extensions and enabled them at that point.
-
@topcat7736 from https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-easy-speed-test-access-new-tab/
"Easy Speed Test Access is a browser hijacker that is bundled with other free software that you download off of the Internet. When installed this browser hijacker it will set the homepage and search engine for your web browser to Easy Speed Test Access New Tab."
Now the real question is: from where did you get your Vivaldi Installer?
Are you also really sure you haven't installed anything else from some questionable download site?
It's not really possible the official installers from vivaldi.com are including these malicious addons. -

It could also happen if you've downloaded programmes from some other source than the developer. These download aggregators create their own installers and are paid to add Search Bars, Browsers and other unwanted items to your system.
You must be very careful with downloads that come from other sources to toggle off any additions you see in the in the install dialog.I have had no such issues with my updates.
-
@topcat7736 Vivaldi does not install and is not capable of installing such software. Either Vivaldi was installed from an unapproved source that bundled the software, or Vivaldi's update process triggered malware you had already installed from a different source, or the malware was downloaded coincidentally around the same time as the update.
It also sounds as though you have something that is spawning across your network, infecting the browser on each machine.

One can not get tired of repeating that you never have to download soft out of its official page, because almost always comes with a 'little gift' like this.
Vivaldi never download bundleware, this PUPs are in your system from other soft -
@catweazle The only things on our machines is Adblock Plus 3.2, Kaspersky Total Security, Lastpass, Application launcher for Drive (by Google), Extensions Manager (aka Switcher) and Malwarebytes 3.0. I don't believe any "gifts" are coming from any of these peoples programs.
Whether they show up or not, folks should be aware that they might be on their systems and go undetected because their malware and antivirus programs don't find them.
And, as for never getting anything "extra", how about all the crazy default search engines which show up in new versions of the browser? Maybe they aren't really there either!
-
@topcat7736 The updates to private or secure search engines are real. A search engine entry is just a shortcut to that search engine. It is NOT an extension or anything like one. You obtained software that installed extensions in Vivaldi, and the source was not Vivaldi.
-
@topcat7736 My old AVG always found PUPs, but I had it set up to do that.
As I mentioned before and others are saying, even if you get quality software, but get it from even a "reputable" third party site, that site must make $. They do this by repackaging your software with their own installers which will add "Optional" free add-ons. These free add-ons come at a price. They are the PUPs you are now seeing and that is how the money is made.
{EDIT] There is a dialog to opt-out but I was too impatient (as are most of us) so we just click the "Continue" button.
You are not alone, I have been caught by this tactic myself by a very reputable third party download site (site withheld to protect the guilty, it is part of their Terms of Use). I thought I was to get a PDF reader/editor.
If software is not available from the author's site I don't download it.Updates are a different matter and come directly from Vivaldi. There is no third party involved to modify the download or affect the install of the updates.

The default search engines that you might not be familiar with are Ecosia, Qwant, and Startpage. Far from being crazy, these search engines protect your privacy, which is why the Vivaldi Team chose them.
-
I add that private search engines have, apart from security and privacy, also another side effect.
By not saving the search history, it is more neutral, avoiding what is defined as a bubble filter.
The search engines 'normale' like Google, Bing, Yahoo direct their searches to the user's history, putting the results according to the preferences of them.
This may be comfortable, but it also includes a great disadvantage, in other words, it is like asking someone who always agrees with you, even if your opinion is wrong.
If you look for the concept that Rick Ashley is the best musician in history, sure you will find fan pages that confirm it, but in later searches of the best musician, Rick Ashley will appear first.
This is what is avoided with the aforementioned private search engines, such as DuckDuckGo, QWant, Startpage, Ecosia and others. -

*Astley
Ok, this does not improve him either
-
@catweazle I'm not a fan either but he had (and still has) a nice voice and sings way better than many of today's so called singers.

Maybe, but sure he is not the best in the history

Of course, everyone knows best singer in history is Hatsune Miku

I apologize for this topic. It seems Slingplayer was installed on two machines and the Slingplayer installation brings along Easyspeedtest and WatchTV for its own use.
