{Feature request] Open http://xxx intranet site when one word is entered in address bar

  • Like IE's option 'Go to an intranet site for single-word entry in the Address bar'.

  • you could just type http://xxx into the box…

  • Not used IE enough to know what IE does right and wrong with local hosts and names, but it can be tricky to always do the right things. 'check local domains' or even a user-entered list of domain parts to try first would be nice for me. It's common for me to go to 'somehost' or 'somehost.test' both of which I'd like it to check on my local domains but sometimes look for info about 'somefilename.txt' so just checking for single word or dots and no spaces isn't the ideal way of deciding hostname or search term. Pretty sure my wish for a browser-configured list is a bit niche though.

You're not very helpful, you know. I figured it out myself and tried to work like this. Got tired and switched back to FF, since I had to type a lot more to access our internal servers. And incidentally decided that this functionality should be present in Vivaldi.

I am not asking for 'intellectual' selection between searching/opening, all I am asking is a simple checkbox which will disable one-word search.

p.s. btw, 'localhost' correctly redirects to 'http://localhost'. A funny hard-coded feature

There is only a simple option required "Don't send anything entered into the address bar to search engines" and make that the default. Simply try to resolve the host name, using DNS regardless if it's one word or not, as it used to be. There is a search box for a reason.

The last snapshot has an option to disable search from the address box.

This option has one caveat - it also disables keyword search ('g' prefix for google and so on) :(
So no, it won't work for me

  • There's a way to do this through creating a custom search engine http://%s and making it a default. I lose ability to search by typing phrase but I got used to typing 'g' prefix in palemoon so it's not a big deal
I hope devs in future won't mimic Opera disallowing custom engine to be selected as default.
