"Computerish" tab bar
-
Well, I already made this request in other threads, but since there's now a nice "Mobile" category, figures it can't hurt to post it again.
A while ago, there were mobile browsers with tabs exactly like what you find on computer browsers. Firefox still does it... For tablet only. Dolphin Browser is the only one to maintain this type of navigation in mobiles (they call it "classic tabs"), but there are two major issues with Dolphin:
- It clearly isn't privacy-friendly
- User can't avoid ads via forced-bookmarks
I suppose some other browsers offer this type of navigation, but if that's the case, they must be full of ads as well, so that's not an option either
I don't know if it's already planned, or done, but it's really the main thing I'm looking for. Please make it a reality!

I think side-tabs would work well on a mobile.
I.e. "swipe from left" to reveal a vertical tab list.
Perhaps there could be a few (configurable amount, maybe 3 or 4 by default) tabs visible if the screen is portrait, and maybe just keep the most recently used visible, in a traditional interface, and have other tabs be accessible via the full list.
On tablets, a "traditional" tabbed interface would work definitely well.
-
@goldnoway What exactly do you call "Computerish tabs"?
Firefox and Chrome both do propose tabs in their mobile versions. What is the exact feature that you are missing? (I have never used Dolphin browser)
-
@guilimote I think it means a tabbed interface where you can select tabs.
Right now, the solution firefox and chrome for mobile phones have is an interface where you select by screens, not tabs.
-
@guilimote I said "computerish" because when I posted a similar message a while ago saying "classic", some people didn't understand.
Yes, all mobile browsers have tabs, but here is a screenshot of Dolphin with Classic Tabs enabled:
-
@LonM thanks, but sorry, not sure to understand you either ^^ (what do you call "screen"?)
@goldnoway ok, thanks. So you mean a tab bar at the top of the screen?
In this case, maybe you should rename your request again (sorry ), to show the words "tab bar", to avoid other questions like mine. (I think it may be obvious only when knowing the Dolphin's denomination)To answer to the main subject, it may be a good idea, but it must be well implemented. Even if smartphone screens tend to be bigger nowadays, the available place for page content is still crucial IMHO on mobile browsers.
-
@guilimote On firefox, you have to press a button and you get a list of screens. I suppose you could say that this is a tabbed layout with thumbnails, but it sometimes displays as a grid, not a list, so it's quite far removed from tabs.
On chrome, you switch by going into a view, and you get a list of screens to scroll through (like you might get from the app switcher), instead of just a standard tabbed interface.
I agree, that perhaps a better title would simply be for a tab bar.
-
Yep, thanks, renamed my request

@lonm said in "Computerish" tab bar:
I think side-tabs would work well on a mobile.
I.e. "swipe from left" to reveal a vertical tab list.
I'd love it.
Only one doubt: what if a site has the same swipe gesture?
Maybe two finger swipe (o swipe from webwiev corners?) is safer. No site(?) use it. -
@GoldNoway can u please edit ur original post and add this screenshot there ??

About this specific request and the released beta:
It seems - but I can't test - that computerish tabs (tabs on top) are the default (enforced) for tablets - but not for mobile, where they actually use the whole screen (default/enforced).
// EDIT: Made the request for side tabs.

For those curious on how this could look like, check out the Peregrine Browser which has a style similar to Vivaldi.
-
I have to admit, on Android I sadly can only use Opera, because of their tab bar on the bottom. In my opinion it's by far the best concept if you hold and control your phone with one hand.
It is a single line of miniature tab one beside the next on the bottom. I hope its ok to link to the old opera blog picture?
Maybe we should start a updated feature request, so it can get attention and I can change to Vivaldi on android, too.

@Saimondo A similar approach can be achieved with tab groups, which is already built to Chromium (but disabled in Vivaldi). Please vote for this - https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/40654/enable-tab-groups

Well this one was done by Vivaldi Team, that can be archived.
Thanks a lot o/

@GoldNoway We have to wait it lands on stable, then it'll be archiviated
