Button on Panel to Close Panel
-
I tried to search on Google and the forum before posting but I couldn't find it. If this is a duplicate, I apologize about that.
I know you can close and open the panel by clicking on the same icon panel (Bookmark, Downloads, Notes, History, Window). It was the same in Opera 12 too. I also know there is a a shortcut for each assigned panel.
I use both Opera 12 and Vivaldi. Since I’m used to close the panel with that button on Opera 12. It feels a bit frustrating on Vivaldi since it don´t have that "close button" there. It also require me to drag all the way to click on the exact same icon and sometimes i have to think twice so i don´t accidentally click on another icon panel. I tried with the "Floating Panel" and "Auto-Close Inactive Panel" but that didn’t work since it close the panel if i switch tab. I didn’t like the way it did so I disabled both of them.
It would be nice if you could add the "close button" as another option to close the panel while still keeping the panels toolbar. It would be good if this was optional so people can choose to turn it on or off like it was with the tabs close button. I took the image above from Internet and marked the "close button" with a red arrow and circle to show how it was/looked on Opera 12.
That´s all and thanks for taking your time to read this.

@dibstealth There are currently two options for opening the Panel Toolbar :-
- F4 Opens/closes the panel
- Tools/Settings/Panel - Panel Options -- "Show Panel Toggle"
The toggle is a small icon on the side of the panel (edge of browser) which opens/closes the panel.
You could also activate
- Tools/Settings/Panel - Panel Options -- "Floating Panel"
This allows closing the panel by clicking anywhere outside the panel.

@tbgbe Thanks for responding. Maybe i explained about the "close button" on panel bad. Those two first options you mentioned and the small icon on the edge wouldn´t work in this case since I prefer to have the Panel Toolbar visible and ready.
"Floating Panel": Overlays the website. I tried clicking outside it but it didn´t do anything unless i activate "Auto-Close Inactive Panel".
"Auto-Close Inactive Panel": Closes the panel as soon i switch tab.
I didn´t like how it overlay the website and that the panels closed when i switch tab.
I decided to disable both "Floating Panel" and "Auto-Close Inactive Panel"However with the "close button" on panel:
Example
-
Vivaldi: You can click on Notes panel icon to open and close the panel. The Panel Toolbar will always stay there.
-
Opera 12: You can click on Notes panel icon to open. However there is two way to close the Notes panel in Opera 12. 1) Click on Notes panel icon to close the panel 2) Click on the "close button"(image is in my first post above marked with red arrow and circle on it") to close the panel. The Panel Toolbar will always stay there
What i´m trying to say it´s just another way to close Notes panel or Bookmark panel,Download panel, History panel, Window panel etc... while the toolbar panel is always there like in Opera 12. Since i use this alot in Opera 12 it´s kinda a bit frustrating in Vivaldi because i have to think twice so i don´t accidently click on the wrong icon to close the panel.

+1 for this feature add.
I think it is relatively commonplace to automatically look to the top left of a window when wanting close or minimise it. Having to click the specific icon of the active panel to dismiss it is not ideal, especially when you have many web panel icons. Considering all of the great UI implementation already in Vivaldi, it boggles my mind that this is missing from web panels.
It could even sit right next to the "Home" icon quite neatly, like in my 10-second mock-up. Simples!

please also add a vote to the first post.

Another option for opening and closing the panel might be just a more prominent toggle. Confluence has a nice solution for this with their menu panel.

When the Panel is on the right, the close button is in the wrong place, leading to confusion.
Panels on Right
Panels on Left
The button should be on the Panel Header Toolbar, if anywhere.

I am also having this issue. I have no extensions installed.
I discovered that if I close the panel menu using the "x" icon, the panel toolbar will not be exhibit expected "auto-close inactive panel" behavior; it will fully close when clicking inside the page, requiring two clicks to get it back.
To revert to the desired behavior, toggle the toolbar, click any icon to open its panel, then close the panel by clicking the same icon.
"Auto-close inactive panel" will now exhibit the desired behavior of closing the panels to toolbar-only when you click inside the page.
Basically, don't close the panels menu with the "x" icon and they'll keep doing what you want them to.

@biggerfisch I've moved your post here, as it's more relevant to this feature request, which is being worked on. You can test it in the latest Snapshot. The close panel button will respect the previous panel sidebar's state.

@wmstack To hide the panel without hiding the Panel Toolbar, just click the active panel's icon.

@wmstack said in Button on Panel to Close Panel:
Hello, I don't like the fact that the close button on the panel hides both the panel bar and the panel itself. I just want it to hide the panel. Can we have an option to do that? I'd go even farther to say that since the close button only shows up when the panel is open, the close button should hide just the panel.
So please add a toggle in the settings for the behaviour of the close button on the panel. I want it to hide the panel without hiding the panel bar.
Yes, I think the best way will be to have 3 options in the settings:
- Button closes only panel window and does not touch panel icons (default)
- Button closes panel window and hides panel icons (the way it works now)
- Hide the button.
This button is too noticeable and interferes with working in the browser. I prefer to always see icons, they are already quite compact. So for now I have to remember that I should never click on the button, otherwise the icons will hide.

@ComradePetrov I also dislike this useless Close Panel Toolbar button. I use this line of CSS to hide it.
/*Hide Panel Close Button*/ .panel button.close.transparent {display: none;}
-
@Pesala Thank you! That's my first CSS mod for Vivaldi and extremely helpful
-
@Pesala @ComradePetrov I couldn't find a request for it, but we'll be allowing you to disable the panel close button in Settings (look for
VB-89453
in the changelog).
