Would it be possible to put a copy of Vivaldi search bar in the Speed Dial?
-
EDIT - Well, it has been implemented in latest V snapshot. Thanks, V team!
-
@goldnoway It's already there, but yes, a mod might be a better solution or at least you might get it sooner.
-
It's funny, over on the Opera forums when they came out with their first chromium versions, people begged for a way to hide the redundant and superfluous search bar on speed dial. When you look at Android, many users try to get rid of the google search on their homescreen too.

redundant and superfluous search bar on speed dial
Exactly my thought on that
-
@luetage The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.
The linked feature request has only two upvotes after a month so it's obviously not missed by many.
-
That's precisely because it could be redundant that a mod would be better in my opinion
(Furthermore I actually need that for my actual config cause the search bar is a little hard to reach lol) -
@goldnoway Ctrl-K always reaches it wherever it is.
-
@goldnoway Why is it hard to reach? If I press the Tab key after starting a new page, focus moves to the Search Field in the Address Bar.
Have you enabled "Focus Content on New Tab," in Settings, Tabs? If so, you would need to focus the URL field with F8 or Ctrl L before pressing the Tab key.
I think there might be easier ways around this workflow issue than creating a mod.
-
@pesala It's hard to reach because I put something to hide the adress & panel bars when the mouse doesn't hover them, and that's precisely what I wanted, but when I want to search for something, the cursor has to stay in place if I don't want the bar to just disappear while typing
-
@goldnoway Have you tried Keyword Searches in the URL field or in the Quick Commands Dialogue?
-
I believe it's potentially possible, but let's put at least 5 question marks on here, because it's complicated to do this as a mod. Would be far easier for the devs to implement.
?????
-
@pesala Oh, didn't think of that, thanks Don't usually use keyword searches or quick commands, but it's never too late to begin!
In any case, if someone wanted to do what I said earlier, I'd take it for sure. And as said earlier, that could probably help one or two other people as well!
-
@luetage I suspect that the Chromium code is always going to favour Google search. Even if I set DuckDuckGo as my default Search Engine in Opera 56, the Google Search field still appears on a new tab.
-
@pesala Yeah, so what. We're talking mods here not default search engines on chromium. It's completely unrelated. Unless you know of a way to show the google search bar on vivaldi speed dial that is. If so the problem is solved and you should share the code now ^^
edit: Just as a note: The google search bar on Opera is paid for by Google. It's direct income for Opera. They could put literally any search engine there, but they obviously won't. That's another reason why the search bar on speed dial was so unpopular back then.

Definitely possible. But you might want to upgrade that to at least 7 question marks and an anxious emoji.
???????😰
You would need to:
- Listen for any changes to the active tab
- If the switched tab is an internal one, create the searchbar including:
- Import the user's search settings
- Execute the search according to the users settings
- Make sure to not mess up the
translate()
positioned speed dials.
-
@lonm I like the addition of the anxious emoji for sure
And yeah, I agree with the listening for the start page, it's a pain. I wouldn't even have tried to import search engine settings, my idea would have been to make a simple text box and just trigger a link made up of a fixed search engine and the search phrase
Don't think the start page layout is an issue, you just make another container below the navigation with the box and the speed dials are below that in their usual environment. Probably gonna lookshittyless than desirable, lol…Then again you could put 2 anxious emoji into the search bar to remedy the situation.
