A Zoom Tool Could Replace the Zoom Slider
-
I use the Buttons for range controls, which takes a bit less space than the Zoom Slider, but I think a single Zoom Tool could replace both the slider and the plus/minus buttons.
Zoom Tool in PagePlus
- Right-click, Shift+Click, or Alt+Click to zoom out
- Drag and select to zoom to area
Zoom Tool Suggestion for Vivaldi
- Left-click button to zoom in
- Right-click button to zoom out
- Left-click then select area to zoom to selection
- Double-click to reset to Webpage Default zoom
-
I think this concept is not userfriendly as Buttons for range controls.
I think Buttons for range controls should be enabled by default instead of Zoom Slider. We can improve them by removing reset button:

I think the request is an interesting one, but I'm not sure how well it would work.
In chrome's engine, "zooming" simply changes the scaling of the webpage, and that would be fine on its own for this.
However, most webpages are set up so that the text will reflow if it ends up going off the screen.
Such "region selection zooms" work for truly static documents like PDFs, but it would take a lot of work to make that also viable for the web, as you would need to change the zoom feature to actually "zoom in" instead of just scaling up the webpage.
-
@lonm If the view port is 1920 pixels wide and the user selects an area 960 pixels wide, the web page would zoom in to 200%
@Stardust I prefer the buttons. The slider takes a lot of space and can be hard to control the zoom to what's wanted.
- The zoom icon on the status bar would do exactly what the

[-]
currently does. - Double-click would do what Reset currently does, so that's three actions in one button. It would not even be necessary to touch the keyboard to do Left, Right, and Double-click.
Setting a precise zoom percentage is rarely what a user wants. If they want to zoom in a lot, rather than clicking multiple times, they could click, and then select an area of interest. Maybe press escape to disable the Zoom Tool.
It might be a problem if they want to zoom in once, then drag to select some text. Probably there is a way around such problems.
Settings, Appearance, would have one more option:
Use Buttons in Range Controls

In Serif PagePlus:
- One click on the Zoom Tool selects it
- One click on the page zooms in
- Shift click on the page zooms out
- Drag and select zooms to selected area
I think Vivaldi could do better.
- One click on the zoom tool zooms in
- Shift+Click or Right-click on the zoom tool zooms out
- One click on the zoom tool also selects it then:
• One click on the page zooms in
• Shift click on the page zooms out
• Drag to select an area zooms to the area
- The zoom icon on the status bar would do exactly what

@stardust The zoom buttons do not repeat as they appear to do in your animation and clicking on the zoom field does not reset it unless you type in a value.
Zooming in several stages (e.g. 100 to 150%) is not that efficient, and would be even less so if finer increments for zoom was enabled. How would removing reset improve matters if users want to restore the default webpage zoom?

Well, this is how Firefox Zoom Buttons work, so I propose to make vivaldi zoom buttons the same.

I agree. There should be some kind of fine tuning setting.

By implementing Firefox buttons concept I guess.
BTW Vivaldi zoom buttons are so tiny on the status bar so it is very hard to use them. -

It might be an improvement, but some may dislike it. Please create a new feature request for that.

Again, create a new feature request about the tiny buttons on the status bar. I find dark themes make it even harder to read the icons. -

But why someone needs to set a precise zoom value? I've never used this "feature"

IMHO click & drag to zoom is not very practical for website zooming, cuz i don't want to constantly dragging from left to right of the page to page zoom for fit to width.
I think an option for sticky selection would be easier to use:
-
Instead of click & drag, we can use 2 clicks to frame the zoom area.
-
Click point A, then show a selection area between point A & the pointer, & then click point B to confirm the zoom.
-
-
@dude99 I never had a problem with selecting an area for taking a screen capture of a selection so why would zooming to a selected area be any harder?
