Solved Synchronization of entire history
-
@Hadden89 actually the size of a history file is even smaller than that, hardly going over 10MB, it's the largest data file, but usually <10MB.
Mine's have data for more than a year of usage and it's only 3,6MB, and I swear, I ain't the typical internet user that just uses facebook... (Actually, I don't think thatalmostany vivaldi user is)
So you would say that storage isn't an issue but well, 100,000 people uploading 1~5MB history files would take GBs of storage, but it's not up to TBs after all, even if 1 million people used the browser, with 10 MB of history (that's some LARGE amount of websites visited), it would be 10TB, which is not that expensive nowadays after all, and even if you think that it is, well, I doubt there's 1 million users with 10MB of history data to sync, and also, bookmarks is the second largest data filewith exception of the favicons, as its not a "user data" file(at least in my computer, but I do use bookmarks a lot, imported from all previous browsers I had and with years of data), but it's still small, mine's just 1,1MB, and I swear i have hundreds or thousands of bookmarks.
So yeah, server storage isn't a problem, for Google or Mozilla or any big thing, let's remember that Vivaldi is entirely free with barely any support after all, but an option to export history, bookmarks and browser data on mobile would be appreciated after all, at least this way we could use our own trusted sync methods.
ps: thatcompressedimage on this forum is bigger than my bookmarks file and almost half as big as my history file -
If storage space is the issue then direct device to device syncing akin to what syncthing does might be an option. I am not a programmer so I have no idea how hard it is to implement this.. Just saying 'cause it's just so sad.. Vivaldi is THE most beautiful and fluid browser I have used and yet it lacks this essential feature. For now, one solution could be if the history database file is stored in a location accessible by all apps and this file can be manually synced among devices by the user using an external service like syncthing and Vivaldi could read this externally synced history database file from the file system and display it as "history from external file" or something.. This could be added in the developer options for those of us for whom history sync is essential.
Please do make history syncing (especially from mobile to pc) priority even if it is something makeshift like what I mentioned above.. Pretty please -
@valdosaw1024 Do you keep all history? I do. By the way, I took a very big value as "extreme usage scenario".
My history file is about 142 Mb which is not very big. I'll be very happy when it is implemented ^^ -

-
@felagund No issues in the urlfield but the history page/panel is set to show only latest two days to avoid lags.
-
Also, syncing just recent history (a month maybe or even just a week) is perhaps enough for most people most of the time.. That shouldn't take much storage space at all.. This is way better than having no history sync at all; history syncing is almost the whole point of sync in a browser (there are other great third party alternatives for bookmarking.. Notion, raindrop.io - to name a few)

I've been using Vivaldi for a few weeks and have been noticing that history doesn't seem to be present on my two computers. Finally I decided to look into it and figured I'd find a bug report. I'm astounded to find out that history is not synced!!! Typed history is synced, which is such a tiny portion of my actual browsing history that it's more accurate to say that history is not synced between devices, than to say that it is.
I get it's a small team providing a free product, but this seems like a very basic part part of any sync. And it's not like there is even a lot of data involved, contrary to what some have suggested (history is at its root just text: URL, and date visited).
History sync doesn't even have to be instantaneous; it could happen once every 24 hours or so, unless manually initiated.

This has happened to me now, again. I searched and browsed some websites with google on mobile phone during the day and now I want to check some of them on desktop. No way, nothing in the history. So I had to find my phone and look at the history there

Hello
This has been the biggest hurdle so far to me as a user using Vivaldi across platforms and devices. History syncing is a must for pro users (which Vivaldi is suited for)
I am a Big Data expert and have experience in distributed data handling and storage. If I can help the Vivaldi team in syncing history for all users in any way, I would be happy to help.
Thanks

Hello everyone, I'm new to the vivaldi forum, this request that I think is essential because the other browsers edge, chrome, opera already has the synchronization of the history, is it already in progress?
-
@watson1993 Not yet, I fear, as is not tagged as
in progress

@hadden89 Some should tag this as soon as possible

BUMP!

+1 Upvoted for this. Please please make an option to sync the full history so users can have consistant user experience over multiple devices.

@rotfl Count me in! I just became your 105th like!
No full sync history in VIV is the ONLY thing keeping me on Firefox.

It's been 4 years we are asking for this. 4 Years this missing feature kept me from switching completely

I really like many of the new features that have been introduced over the past year, many of which probably took up quite a bit of time and effort.
But it's probably safe to say that many of them are "frills" that some people will love, but many people won't get a hold lot of use out of.
Meanwhile I think most people would agree that in an age of working across multiple devices, syncing all history instead of a very small subset, is a basic core feature.
I'm excited to see what the (very small) Vivaldi team come up with next, but maybe an outstanding core feature like this can be moved up the list of priorities.

Vivaldi is an excellent browser and I like it very (very) much. But I do not think many people need a Mail client, Calendar and Feeds reader in a browser.
So I am just repeating:
