Split address into breadcrumbs for Ctrl+Click discoverability

  • I think that Ctrl+Click feature has poor discoverability.

    Idea

When user holds Ctrl key and mouse is over address bar then address should be split into button-like rectangular blocks.

U suppose this is kind of like how Windows Explorer works:

This would be a good idea for showing off how the feature works, though for initial discoverability there is still the issue that a user would have to know to hold ctrl before hovering over the address bar.

If the issue at end is deiscoverabilty, then either change the look of the address as soon as someone presses Ctrl OR the mouse is over the address would make it more visible.
Although, I'm not sure I'd like to see the address change format when trying to use this feature (because my mouse might initially be navigating in one direction but then have to make a detour to go to the actual place of where that part of the address is now). With that in mind, I think that what Explorer does now, as @LonM pointed out, is probably much cleaner and usable - and also enhances the use of the feature (now you wouldn't need to hit Ctrl to use it, for instance)

  • @lonm Personally... I hate these arrows 😉

@pauloaguia Yup, but showing them constantly is... huh... I'd like the URL to look like URL until I want to do some magic with it.

Dunno... maybe some shadows that get more visible when hitting key?...
The implementation lays with the V-team.

IMO many cool features in V are well hidden...
There are so many functionalities just in address bar that probably many people haven't noticed.

Well, they don't have to be arrows... Can still be slashes, or nothing at all...

This made me think - how about, whenever you hover a part of the URL, you get a small tooltip saying something like "Ctrl+click here to go to docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell", for instance.
Doesn't change the look of the URL or even the length of it - just points out a feature that you might want to know.
I'm sure it'll piss off some people, so there should be a way to configure it not to show the tooltip, of course. Maybe even hide it all together automatically, once the user uses the feature for a few times.

So true. But that is true for pretty much any application that has lots of features and configurations - there's only so much you can show at once... and we all know that nobody reads the manual to find them 😛

  • @lonm
A local menu like these of firefox could list the function and show its shortcut.

  • This so rarely actually works with dynamic websites.
