Idling Vivaldi with no tabs shows permanent network activity
-
Open Vivaldi, no tabs.
Open Menu -> Tools -> Task manager
The first "Browser" process shows permanent network use activity of ~4.5 KB/sec.Same can be confirmed by the Windows task manager, which shows same constant WLAN network traffic coming from Vivaldi.
Other browser do not show network activity if idling.
I see with Wireshark that Vivaldi permanently talks to 82.221.130.131 via SSL.
The 82.221.130.131 resolves to Advania / Thor Data Center in Iceland (via https://www.whois.com/whois/82.221.130.131).What?!? I do not expect and do not agree that Vivaldi keeps some "hidden" SSL connection to some data center.
OK, I see now this is because I've logged in to Vivaldi "Sync" service. If I log off from "Sync", the traffic terminates.
Come on, is a permanent network connection with traffic is really needed for idling browser? I have a notebook and every permanent WLAN activity is a permanent power drain.

If one wants a sync service that essentially keeps data sync'd in real time, the price that must be paid is both to "keep alive" the sync connection via various 'pings' and to continually update the sync server with status reports about the data being sync'd in each of the associated active browsers (whether "idling" or not). The alternative would be a sync-on-demand service that only updates/sync's upon user manual command.

@blackbird I honestly just want to keep my bookmarks and account data in sync. They change may be once in the session. A permanent sync connection keeping the network interface active (and eating my battery) is an overkill. It would be enough to have the sync happen every N minutes, and let the user decide how small/big this N should be. In my case it would be 60.

@andreyl Please keep in mind that the Sync service hasn't been officially released yet nor has it been announced in the Stable stream yet (even though it's already available there). As every "experimental" feature (or work still-in-progress), it might not work as expected at times.
If you feel that something is not working as it's supposed to, please take some time to read the article on How to report a bug? and follow the instructions there to report the issue to the developers. Thank you.

@gwen-dragon : I've created https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/29461/add-option-to-configure-non-permanent-sync.

@andreyl I voted for the request, but you could simply log-in on startup, then log-out after synchronisation is committed.
-
@pesala yes, I could. But this means, I have to enter my password on every login. This makes little sense for an option which should avoid entering passwords by keeping them
