Ghostery for Vivaldi
-
Hi! I was wondering if Vivaldi would consider hooking up with Ghostery to create an extension. Love this browser and its light weight configuration and speed. I have ditched Google (Big Brother) because of its privacy issues. Ghostery would greatly enhance Vivaldi's no tracking feature. I don't know if this is possible, but just a thought. Thank you!

I'm not sure if there would be much use to that. You can already install ghostery, as pretty much all extensions compatible with chrome are also compatible with Vivaldi .

Maybe it's a problem to connect Ghostery with Vivaldi, because it's proprietary software

Just for completeness sake:
The Ghostery browser extension has been available as open-source since March of this year and it is available under the Mozilla Public License.
The only things this license does not include are Ghostery's proprietary lists and tracker databases. They are built into officially distributed extensions, but it's perfectly legal for you to create the WebExtension yourself using the provided dummy data instead. Once the Ghostery extension is up and running in your browser, it will notice that the lists are outdated and request the latest versions from their webservers.
I guess this makes your request moot. The extension is already open-source but useless without the tracking data and it's not the most important part anyway, since it easily be installed by everyone from the Chrome Web Store. Including the most valuable part in Vivaldi on its own is not easily possible, because Ghostery/Cliqz GmbH claims they are copyright protected and must not be used without explicit permission. That is unlikely going to be free.

@flash Thank you for your input. I am not well versed on use of said open source and proprietary software and all associated browser intricacies/licensure. I guess I am a officially "senior citizen" in terms of technological jargon....lol

I just want to tell you that I just now installed Ghostery on Vivaldi and it works.

I've been using the Chromium Ghostery extension since I first installed Vivaldi. It works fine. But maybe a Vivaldi-branded version might be good publicity for the browser? I don't see any other reason for it beyond that.

can't get it for Vivaldi on mobile, though, and that's where i need it most.

Ghostery should be ok as long as ghostrank is not turned on as it had privacy issues.
