Features vs Extensions

@luetage Hmmm. I wonder where you heard that. RSS has been on the list from the beginning. Obviously there is a lot of things on our list, but that includes RSS. Both RSS and our mail client are getting attention. We are fans of RSS at Vivaldi and we are not afraid of doing the opposite of our competition. You know that.
-
@jon Yeah, I wondered that too, that's why I dug up the old topic and found a link to twitter ––> https://twitter.com/vivaldibrowser/status/710109212949352448
Interestingly there are fresh replies on this old status, but I didn't know about them. Anyway, that's probably the source I recalled. -
@luetage , The RSS reader is bug/feature nr. VB-465, so it is quite old, but I guess the the answer was regarding whether it was on the short term roadmap, and it was not at the time. It has been getting some more attention and we hope we will have something to show... WIR.
The RSS reader is clearly high on the request list from many of you and thus it is high on our list as well.

@jon The "feature" is control - of messages, and we can extend this to message handling and storage, central and local document storage and workflow. But Vivaldi should be pretty clear of "ambition", and also that the offering is unique. Here I have only "security": Vivaldi kan replicate names and make a local DNS, well of them: Home, Work and foreign office. Add to this a code convention for "Local" addresses so sysadm can set up resources in the office. If the browser always consult the local DNS, it will be pretty impossible to intercept and re-route - "phishing". Then I will throw in one more: encryption using distributed keys - "Blockchains". It is easy to distribute "tokens" and exchange message that are virtually impossible to crack . and these do not need any central certification authority. The browser can then use the same and offer secure networks, secure web-sites for allowing browsing on internal networks also on the net, and on networks that are not connected to a central certification authority. Lift the roof, and take a look for what you would like of the net. Simple security and verifiable names are high on my list, and to complete this, the email in the browser, this should use the same names and encrypt with the same algorithms. We can split the coding...

@jon what's missing is nothing new and I know there are many users waiting for. Mail encryption.

@healing_cross: The point with having the features in there is that you get something that works well together. We make sure of that. You do not need to use all the features. Most of us do not do that anyways. But you choose certain features that are helpful for you and use them. You mention a few above that you use and I am sure you will gradually find more. After a while you wonder how you managed without them.
-
@healing_cross Good to have you on board. I am sure that you will enjoy Vivaldi. Quite often features you need are there when you need them and if not, just let us know. We aim to continue to make sure Vivaldi feels just right for you and all others that choose to use Vivaldi.

Yes, built in features is the reason why i use vivaldi, and i am very glad with the new addition of resized panels. Vivaldi is just great!
But ... there are glaring omissions too, and some cannot be solved by any extension. For now it is not possible to use a touchscreen with Vivaldi, while tablets/hybrids are ubiquitous and more and more laptops and even desktops have touchscreens.
This keeps me from using vivaldi as my main (or only) browser, because I use my touchscreen a lot, for easy scrolling, zooming, navigating, etc.
So I hope this is on the shortlist too -
@peefy Of course. We have done a fair bit here, but we can improve. Make sure to report to the point bugs and feature requests and we will do our best to improve. Clearly this is important for tablets, PCs with touch and mobile as well.

That's not true, I've been using Vivaldi on a touch screen device for almost two years. There's still a lot to improve - it's not as smooth as Edge for example, but to say that it is unusable on a touchscreen would be an overstatement...
-
@pafflick I suppose touch-screen drivers differ from one device to the next, and some are better with Vivaldi than others.
-
@ayespy Perhaps. I don't recall anyone reporting that it doesn't work on the touch screen at all. It's jerky and it doesn't support literally any gestures - not to mention that sometimes it can even stop working almost completely, but all you do is just restart the browser and it starts working again. It's not reliable, but it is possible to use Vivaldi on a touchscreen...

I would say that of course not every extension can be built in to the browser and some of them should not be. For example , if you use specific websites, there are some extensions that work only for those websited that will improve your experience there. Let's say if you use reddit such an extension would be RES. These extensions of course have no place in the built in features of a browser.
I think what vivaldi needs to focus on is widely used extensions that provide features that you basically forget about after installing the extension.
I'll give a few examples:
Ublock origin (adblock) - Blocks almost all adds on every site and you forget about it.
Privacy Badger, this turns off tracking from websites. In most cases, you just install the extensions and forget about it. Sometimes a website will not function properly so you might need to turn it off or enable some of the trackers it blocks but in the majority of time it just works.
Another extension is https everywhere, again it works almost all the time and you just forget about it .
Past these 3 extensions, the other extensions I have are just for specific websites except 'Stylus' which basically allows you to customize any website you want and change its css.
I also have Speed Dial 2 and Session Buddy installed but rarely use them anymore since vivaldi has a Speed Dial and Sessions though the sessions feature for now is still very limited compared to the extension as there is no extension manager yet.

yes you are right @pafflick , i was not specific enough. It mostly works but has rough edges. Thanks for the clarification!

Will Vivaldi ever bring back Unite (old Opera feature) to Vivaldi? It allowed the browser to function like a web server. Maybe make this web torrent to share bandwidth
-
@archive1 Vote for File Sharing like Opera Unite

@catweazle: I know this is a couple months too late but most operating systems these days have built-in advanced screen capture tools. Windows 10 and Apple OS X have native solutions which satisfy features previously exclusive to third-party tools and most open-source systems through their desktop environments come with their own solution.
I still use ShareX in Windows, mainly because I don't use Windows Explorer as a shell, and I believe the snipping tools in Windows require Explorer (as do most other modern UI things in Windows).

It is true that Windows and other OS include by default systems to capture the screen, from using simply use the capture key to the snippet tool. But this, apart from having few options and does not do more than copy the capture to the Clipboard and having to open it later in some editor is in many occasions too messy, especially if we want to share the capture on the network.
ShareX and similar facilitate these operations considerably, apart from allowing additional functions, such as video capture or gif and even extracting text with an OCR, apart from uploading the results directly to the corresponding hosts in order to share it.
Those who only occasionally use a screen capture will naturally suffice with the tools included in the OS and Vivaldi, but not users who use screenshots often to post them quickly, to make tutorials or similar, for them programs like ShareX are essential -
I try to avoid extensions for one simple reason. Security. I think I suggested this feature before and even Edge since it relies on the Microsoft Store lets you disable automatic extension updates.
I would love for Vivaldi to include this. A setting to disable automatic updating of extensions so we can update them manually when we want or need. Its not common for malicious user to buy popular extensions on the Google Store and then push down an update with something fishy. Disabling updates would prevent this and give you time until the extension is removed or fixed.
Third parties pushing code down to your browser (or computer) without your consent is always a bad idea.

Are there any news of the built-in email client that's been 'one highly anticipated' for more that 4 years now ? I'm a big fan of Vivaldi and was of Opera since 2001, and very much waiting this feature. Thanks
