Google Chrome 68 Released - New Security Features
-
I just saw the news post on BleepingComputer about Chrome 68 and some of it's new security features. Hopefully Vivaldi will be able to work those in to 1.16 before it goes final. I know the devs have already put a ton of work into updating 1.16 based on Chromium 67, but in my line of work "security features" always catches my attention.
Anyway, here's a quick rundown of some of the security related changes:
-
Chrome will show "Not secure" in the address bar for pages loaded over unencrypted HTTP connections. While this may cause some website owners trouble if visitors are confused about this, I feel it is a step in the right direction, as most users know nothing about encryption or how to tell if their data is being sent to a server securely.
-
Chrome will no longer allow iframes to redirect the parent page unless a user has first interacted with them. This should help cut down on malicious advertisements redirecting visitors to other pages, at least until the miscreants who do that sort of thing figure out a new way to do it.
-
The infamous "tab-under" behavior, where a page opens a new tab when a user clicks on a link and loads a new page filled with ads in the old tab, will now be blocked. All I have to say about this one is "It's about time!"
This version of Chrome also blocks third-party applications (such as Anti-Virus) from injecting code into Chrome. Here's what Google said about this change back in November (more info here):
Chrome 68 will begin blocking third-party software from injecting into Chrome processes. If this blocking prevents Chrome from starting, Chrome will restart and allow the injection, but also show a warning that guides the user to remove the software.
modedit Moved to Browsers forum as it is not really Vivaldi news
