Inbox.google.com telling me my browser is not supported.

  • Got an invite to Google Inbox, going to the website (after activating) I am greeted with the following message: Oops, your browser is not yet supported. Inbox works best on Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. More browsers coming soon. DOWNLOAD GOOGLE CHROMEDOWNLOAD FIREFOXDOWNLOAD SAFARI Apparently Google is filtering out Vivaldi already :(

That's not really how it works. Sites sniff for browser user agents they recognize. If they don't recognize them, you get "yer stupid old browser won't work here" messages.

  • Ever since the bad old days of "this site works best in IE6" I have absolutely hated this bad practice of web designers.

It's fair enough to give me a warning if you don't know if my browser will work with your site but FFS just let me in anyway if I want in!!!

  • The user agent string of Vivaldi is almost the same as Chrome, it even has Chrome in it.

    Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_2) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/41.0.2272.105 Safari/537.36 Vivaldi/1.0.156.2

    Useragent of a chrome browser:
    Mozilla/5.0 ;Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; AppleWebKit/537.36 ;KHTML, like Gecko; Chrome/39.0.2171.95 Safari/537.36

Maybe move Vivaldi to the middle?

  • Have you considered trying any of the following User Agent switchers? (listed in order of most recent update):

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher-for-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher/ffhkkpnppgnfaobgihpdblnhmmbodake
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher/lkmofgnohbedopheiphabfhfjgkhfcgf

I had been thinking of giving them a try, but hadn't needed one yet. If you do try them, let us know if any work well.

(Extensions are not fully supported yet in Vivaldi, especially those that need a button on the Tool Bar for controls, but many extensions will work and can be managed from vivaldi://chrome/extensions. If you don't see the "Add to Chrome" button for any extensions in the Chrome Web Store, visit the store from the icon in the lower right corner of the vivaldi://apps page, and after that the button should be visible regardless of your path to the store in future visits.)
