How to set a local file as Home Page.
-
I've just installed Vivaldi. Used Opera for years and this looks as good or better. When I try to set a local file as Home Page it insists on placing https:// ahead of the path.
How do I set a local file as Home Page? Thanks for all replies.
-
How do you access the Index of "/" ?
-
@lamarca Not sure what you mean. The filepath to the Home Page I want is:
file:///ace/htp/Imx-Current.html
... but when I type this in the Settings > Start box it prepends https://
Aha! Got it! Pasting and saving does the trick - typing it in gives the previous problem. Thanks for the forced review.

@52midnight I set a local file as home page. Well it works on my distro.
- on startup page make sure the "specific pages is checked
- type / (slash) on address bar
- copy the local file URL
- paste the address on Start Pages box
Mine was: file:///home/lamarca/tmp/cpu_spike.png

@52midnight Issue solved, marking the topic as resolved.

I reported this bug some months ago.
(VB-37088) Difficult to Type Localhost File Path for Home Page (confirmed, unassigned)

That's not a Linux issue.
I can easily set any local file as Home Page. Let me quote the topic starter:@52midnight said in How to set a local file as Home Page.:

As you can see, it affects Windows.
-
@lamarca It seems to affect Linux too: Let me quote the OP

Exactly the same issue as in Windows, and the same workaround. It is not yet fixed.
-
Okay. I will demonstrate how to use a local file as Home Page step by step:
-
open a new tab
-
type (/) slash
-
the output
-
select the file location
-
the file address will be in the address bar
I will pick up any *,png file. just a sec.

@lamarca You're wasting your time. I know about the workaround, but users cannot type the URL in the Settings dialogue. That is the bug. You can check for yourself if it has been fixed yet on Linux and/or Windows.

lamarca always do the job
-
@lamarca the bug still exists, you can't deny it. There's just a clumsy workaround by copy/pasting, and even that prepends https:// by itself the first time, but when typing the problem is still there, it insists on prepending https:// whatever you type.

Not for me. It works like I described above.
What's your platform? -
@lamarca Windows 7, and just because it dosen't happen to you, it doesn't mean the bug does not exists. The OP had the same problem. The bug is confirmed in bugtracker. You're probably checking only the Startup With/Startup Pages field but the OP specifically told the Startup/Home Page Specific Page field, which is the one showing the problematic input.

I am aware of it.

The topic starter was picking up the wrong address.
Listen, the bug exists, the status is:minor loss function or other problem where an easy workaround is present.
We won't get anywhere.

That's just sad to hear. The easiest, temporary, fix for the devs should be to remove the badly implemented autofilling feature, until a better solution is found. Just comment out the code and leave a /* FIX ME */ on it
-
An easy solution would be to implement:
Always much easier to browse and select a file than to mistype a URL or copy/paste from a file manager.
Not all sites are https:// mine is http:// so this autofill needs to be removed.
-
@gwen-dragon That's what we have for the Window Background Image. It works fine for me.
-
Although the topic starter, which is a Linux user, said the issue is solved. Tag Resolved removed.
