Suggestion for Efficiently Updating Tab Thumbnails

  • Re: Tab Thumbnails Don't Update

This is the one issue that keeps me from using tab thumbnails even though I want to:

Tab thumbnails are created for new tabs and updated only when refreshing the page or navigating the a new domain. This results in the above problem where thumbnails aren't serving their main purpose: to make finding a tab easier. Also, refreshing the page doesn't necessarily help since thumbnails usually only show the page headers and banner ads. Pages with videos, games or web apps usually only show a black box or the first frame of an ad since thumbnails load before the content does.

Constantly update thumbnails would be bad, though, because it would slow Vivaldi down.

So my suggestion is: Update a tab when it loses focus!

    • Uses roughly the same amount of resources
    • Your tabs don't all look like headers and banner ads
    • Tabs get to look like the last thing you saw (e.g. in a video or halfway down a page)
    • Current tab thumbnail can optionally be blank, making it easier to identify out of the corner of your eye

Whether you like 👍 or hate 👎 the idea, please share your thoughts! 🙏

  • @dude99 unfortunately, that's a feature that only works in chrome, and only to update thumbnails for the most used sites that appear on their new tab page.

  • @ouroboros4545 Oh. Sorry it's not very helpful to u.

  • A better way for thumbs is welcome.
Unsure about the lose focus status - which would slow down Vivaldi if frequent tab switching is done.
Wouldn't be better to load the thumb several seconds of the tab load? (To prevent black "thumbs", cookie policy screens ecc)

  • I tried posting about this earlier, because of my frustration with Twitter making tab thumbnails pretty much worthless.

How about the simple option of manually refreshing the tab thumbnail with a right click??
