Option to Not Shrink Pinned Tabs
-
Before Chrome started shrinking pinned tabs, Opera didn't shrink them. And sometimes I miss that behavior of Opera. It's handy to shrink tabs of Gmail, an RSS reader or some other tab which you used to have open for weeks. So you shrink that tab just to make it stop distracting you from other tabs. But sometimes you pin a tab just to read it later. In this case it's not good that you don't see it's title. So you end up by just ignoring it for weeks or months even if you have free time to read it.
Or you are monitoring some thread on a message board and want to switch to that tab freaquently. But finding needed tab by favicon is hard when there are a lot of tabs with the same favicon.
So I propose to make it possible to not shrink some pinned tabs. I propose to add a new option for not pinned tab which will say "Pin and Shrink Tab". This will work as the current "Pin Tab" option. And the "Pin Tab" option will just pin, but not shrink.
In addition for pinned tabs there could be new options "Shrink" or "Un-shrink" - depending on whether the tab is currently shrinked or no.

@alexander-gorbovets I did not like this behaviour in Opera 12.18 either. I don't open many tabs, but at least in Opera I can stack pinned tabs to prevent them shrinking to icons.

I have modified the multiline tabs css mod to not shrink pinned tabs. With this mod pinned tabs will have asterisk to distinguish them from regular tabs.
Just append contents of this gist to the end of the common.css file:https://gist.github.com/gorsash/0d4de703a84c620c7280830aba582758
On Windows common.css is located at %localappdata%\Vivaldi\Application\VIVALDI_VERSION\resources\vivaldi\style\ (replace VIVALDI_VERSION with the currently installed Vivaldi version, for example - 1.15.1147.47).

Mod above have issues on the newest versions of Vivaldi.
There are 2 updated mods which allow to achieve this:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/25453/multiple-row-tabs/25 (for multirow tabs)
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/25453/multiple-row-tabs/26 (for not shrinking pinned tabs)Theoretically you can use only the second mod if you don't want to have multirow tabs, but I didn't test it without the first mod.

I would love to see such an option. But at least for the horizontal tab placement, you need ways to separate a normal tab from a pinned tab.
I thought about several ways to separate a normal tab from a pinned tab.
- Here, the pin button can also act as a button to (un)pin the tab.
- May interfere with the tabstack bar at the top of a tabstack but not if it is a distinct different colo
- Self explaining
- I personally really like this one.
- I added a shadow on the right side of the pinned tab to make it stand out from the rest. Maybe this idea can be combined with idea 4. Also, if you have lots of tabs open, you can let the normal tabs slide under the pinned tabs because the pinned that is raised. (not sure if this is already the behaviour because I don't have so many tabs open normally).

BTW, there's a way to put CSS mod files in some folder (instead of editing style.css) so they will not be lost after Vivaldi update: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/10549/modding-vivaldi

@alexander-gorbovets I have this use case as well. For me it is that I don’t have that many tabs, but some are really important to me. Like my scrum board. I want it always open and big.
I discovered I can get this with tabs on the side. But I am a top tabs kind of guy. I would be content with a setting to never shrink pinned tabs, though the most flexible solution would be to support regular / locked / pinned state per tab.
