Installing a portable version disables update notifications for my non portable version
-
I occasionally install portable versions when I experience issues with my main installation to check if none of my configurations and extensions are the culprits but the portable versions install their own update notifier and disable the one used by the non portable installation (the Notify About Updates box becomes unchecked and the Vivaldi Update Notifier startup entry is replaced with the portable one). Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I use a portable install too and don't have any update notifier, but what you are getting should be the desired behaviour. An update from Vivaldi directly would use the default install paths and overwrite your installed version
-
@claraangeles @sjudenim Just to clarify, you should know that there is NO portable version of Vivaldi.
Like others, I believe that you are confusing "Standalone" with Portable.
While Standalone does install everything under the same folder (similar to portable installs), things like passwords and extensions are still locked into the O.S. user install (because of encryption) and are not transferable.Regarding Start Up - I also only have the Standalone entry for Update Notifier.
As Standalone is (almost) always the version I use it is my desired option. -
A portable application (portable app), sometimes also called standalone, is a program designed to read and write its configuration settings into an accessible folder in the computer, usually the folder where the portable application can be found. This makes it easier to transfer the program with the user's preferences and data between different computers. A program that doesn't have any configuration options is also a portable application.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_application
I can't speak for the passwords since I don't use them, but I've had used mine on different computers, without leaving any files on the host computer since nothing is installed to the registry or elsewhere. In my understanding, that is the behaviour and purpose of portable software.

@sjudenim said in Installing a portable version disables update notifications for my non portable version:
easier to transfer the program with the user's preferences and data between different computers.
This is the important part! Extensions and passwords (which are preferences/data) cannot be transferred between computers, that is why I said it isn't portable.

This is the important part
A portable application (portable app), sometimes also called standalone,
you are trying to separate 2 things that are considered the same. The distinction you are referencing is between an installed version and a portable one.
Here's an example were preferences are not transferred but considered a portable app,
https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/what-is-the-difference-between-portable-installable-apps/I've yet to find anything that supports your interpretation. Care to share any?

@sjudenim Sure, as we are talking about Vivaldi
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/21666/portable-vivaldi-with-portable-passwords
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/9657/portable -
Thanks everyone for the explanations, I confused portable with standalone. I thought that standalone was similar to the option offered in Opera 12.
-
Yet another definition
https://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_appSaved passwords inability to transfer does not negate a programs "portability" or not (especially if other personal data is transferable), it's ability to run on different systems without the need of installation does.
Again
A portable application (portable app), sometimes also called standalone,
Technically, they are one in the same
I'm not using the official install either which might lend to some of the confusion
-
@sjudenim I see where you are coming from.
You are using the term portable where the distinction is purely the need to reinstall; whereas I am just saying that not everything will be available when using it across systems. This is not about definitions, but more about user expectations. I know that many users expect everything to work in a "portable" app.
If you are using it without passwords and extensions, that is fine. Not everyone has the same expectations. -
@claraangeles nope sadly the only thing that make opera better than vivaldi its that i can move all and its really portable, including addons, history bookmark, easy and simple. Vivaldi meanwhile encrypt everything and its locked into the OS, they are trying to implement the sync option kinda like chrome but its not working at all, i have a new desktop and tried last time and nothing really synced it was all blank which its why im not using vivaldi on that machine only on my old one
-
@eilegz Interesting. Sync is working perfectly here.
-
@ayespy exactly like chrome? where every addons syncs?
-
@eilegz Of course not. It hasn't reached that stage of development. Of course I am an add-on hater and don't use them, so for me that is not an issue. Features should be in the browser - no add-ons.
But for each of the sync items that do sync, they sync properly. There are several. And here, that would be the opposite of "nothing really synced it was all blank..."
So, perhaps you could be a bit more precise in your claims.
-
@ayespy thats why a real portable app should be an option, i dont use many addons, but having to install everything again its just a pain. What its even worse its that there are special addons that i use and now its not on chrome store anymore having to set it up its even harder... I know that eventually everything will be sync on vivaldi, i mean if firefox did it after many years which for me its a surprise since i gave up on that idea. meanwhile allow or improve the standalone mode into a real portable mode

@eilegz
Hi, addons are synced too but I only use 4-5 already.
Settings are not synced completely but passwords, bookmarks and some more.Cheers, mib
