Drag-Configurable Bookmarks Bar Folder Menus
-
In both Chrome and Firefox, the user can click and drag an entry in the folder menus on the bookmarks bar. This can be used to rearrange the order of the entries in the menu, to take an entry out of the menu and drop it on the bar itself, or to place it in whatever position the user wants inside another folder menu. I find this method more convenient than rearranging the bar and folder menus in the panel or bookmarks menu.
I would also like to suggest the implementation of a right-click context menu on entries in Bookmarks Bar folder menus.

+1
The bookmark bar is certainly unfinished. This has been requested before, and hopefully they'll fix it. I consider this more a bug than a feature.
The BM bar is the most important part of the whole bookmarking experience for me, and if that doesn't work right, the rest doesn't really matter. -
This has been my pet feature for quite some time.
I have requested this several times in hopes that this will be implemented.
Maybe this time. All entries in the Bookmarks Bar should be drag and drop.
In Chrome I could drag and drop any bookmark into any folder from any folder. -
@dominateeye +1 I love how Firefox (and now Chrome) allow moving stuff around.
-
I totally agree! We can "Cut" then "Paste" in the proper folder but that is not always as efficient.
-
Drag and Drop does at least work on the Bookmarks Bar, just not in Bookmark Bar Folders, and the Bookmarks Menu.
Currently, one must use the Bookmarks Panel to organise bookmarks, where drag and drop is supported.

For that, vote for Context Menu in Opened Bookmarks Bar Folders
-
@cottontails Nobody is ignoring the request. It just takes more work than they have time for at the moment.
Have you tried organising your bookmarks in the Bookmarks Panel? Drag and Drop works fine, but users with lots of bookmarks and not much vertical height to work with, might find it cumbersome.
For me, it is not a problem as I have 1600 vertical pixels to play with.
The Context Menu in Bookmarks Bar folders is a related problem and might get fixed at the same time as this. Don't ask when!
When it is ready is the only answer anyone can give us.

@whane I would say that you're not in a position to know how much work it would take to implement these features on the Bookmarks Bar.
Me too, neither. I have no inside knowledge. However, I do know that those with inside knowledge have stated that it would take a lot of work.
Vivaldi using the Chrome rendering engine, but the UI they have to develop from scratch. Nothing comes for free.
Check out the Modding Forum to get some insights into what is possible now with some work. It may be some time before we get this built-in by default.

back to topic!
After a year, I gave the browser a second chance, and was amazed that the feature is still not implemented - for me it is a very basic function for all-day browsing! -
@Tosch It is much more than a year, as you could guess from the bug-report number of VB-9419 given by QuHno.
The issue is as old as the Bookmarks Bar itself. However, as explained many times, it takes more work to implement than some people realise. I suspect that it won't happen in 2019 either, so come back next year, or learn to sort your bookmarks in the Bookmarks Panel or Bookmarks Tab.
-
I've done some web development involving HTML drag and drop and I can attest to the fact that it is particularly nasty to develop.
I wouldn't even begin to imagine how you would actually write a test suite for it.

@Pesala - thx for answering - I'm amazed you think it's just an exotic feature, and not central.
In my environment is much project-related work, and without a constant adjustment or re-arangement of the bookmarks, the work would be much more harder. -

I said no such thing. Please don't put words into my mouth.
-
@Tosch A full-featured bookmark bar is planned. But getting it, unfortunately, is not easy like flipping a switch.
-
@Ayespy Nice to hear. Thanks.

Though not mentioned in the Snapshot Blog as far as I can see, this is now implemented in Snapshot 2.4.1483.4, so the thread should be tagged as In Progress (not Done until/unless it makes it to the Stable build of 2.4.
If anything other than Sort Manually is selected for the Bookmarks Bar, Drag and Drop still works, but the change is not reflected until Sort is changed to Sort Manually.
-
This is now DONE.
-
@greybeard this is a good workaround, better than nothing, thx for suggesting
-
@dogmaJo As mention above, workarounds are no longer required. For a long time now one has been able to drag and drop bookmarks between bookmark folders and subfolders.
-
I'm not seeing this at all. I'm trying to drag from the address bar to folders on the bookmarks bar and if I'm doing something wrong, or if the latest version dropped support for this since 21 Jan 2020 please let me know.
Alternatively, if there's a little video or some sort of tutorial showing how to drag from the address bar to a folder in the bookmarks bar please let me know.
I'm running Vivaldi 3.5.2115.87 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 63862004ac4fa761fcf3c744cd6ac9ef44284b9cThis is kind of a dealbreaker the way I organize bookmarks constantly, and I've tried opening up the bookmarks panel on the side and that's just not manageable. I look forward to hearing back on a technique or something in case I'm missing what to do, or finding out if this has really been resolved at all.
Thanks
