Error message after update

  • Got a notice in windows tray saying that an update was available. I chose to accept the update. Then I got a message saying "... failed due to unspecified error. " However Help > About and Help > Check for Updates indicate that I have the most up to date version., "1.14.1077.60 (Stable channel) (32-bit)." Vivaldi seems to work properly. Wondering what to do, if anything. Maybe javascript didn't update, or an extension didn't update?

  • @nomenclator Hmmm. If I do chrome://settings/help the Settings screen that comes up says "Version 64.0.3282.189 (Official Build) (32-bit)" Now I'm confused.

    Blocked by antivirus?
Check your %TEMP% folder and delete the content.

    chrome://settings/help

Why do you call the internal chrome page?

hat comes up says "Version 64.0.3282.189

Yes, the internal Chromium version is 64.0.3282.189.

    You can see it in:

    User-Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/64.0.3282.189 Safari/537.36 Vivaldi/1.95.1077.60

  • @gwen-dragon In the %temp% folder I found an "vivaldi_installer.log" that said this near the end:

VERBOSE1:install.cc(126)] Overwriting per-user Start menu "Vivaldi" shortcut to C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe.
[0319/101656.997:WARNING:install.cc(124)] Failed: Overwriting (maybe the shortcut doesn't exist?) per-user Start menu "Vivaldi" shortcut to C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe.

[0322/142446.151:ERROR:archive_patch_helper.cc(119)] Failed to apply patch C:\Users\Teddy\AppData\Local\Temp\scoped_dir7076_7594\setup.1.14.1077.55-1.14.1077.60.delta to file C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\1.14.1077.55\Installer\setup.exe and generating file C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\1.14.1077.60\Installer\setup.exe using bsdiff. err=8

It didn't say which user didn't get their shortcut overwritten. I don't see any missing shortcuts in my main adminstrator user. I'm going to look at the other users, But I think there wouldn't be a missing or non-working shortcut because I think the old ones referred to the same executable to start vivaldi.

  • It also looks like there was some patch that failed to be applied but I can't figure out what it is trying to say beyond that.

  • OK, I think I see what the error with the patch might be. In the new version's folder named .....\1.14.1077.60\installer there is no folder named setup.exe, like there is in the folder named ...\1.14.1077.55\installer. But I don't yet know what bsdiff.err=8 means. There is just a vivaldi.7z file (which wasn't in the old version folder) and chrmstp.exe file.

  • At the folder ...program files\vivaldi\application* the vivaldi.exe file (the file that the startup shortcut refers to) is listed as being version 1.14.1077.60

  • OK. bsdiff has something to do with binary substitution. An error applying a patch? err=8? Also there is something about "Courgette," and err=3.

  • I could try uninstalling vivaldi and then installing the latest version. However I'm worried that something about the confused new updated installation may cause the uninstallation to not proceed properly.

  • Programs and Features listed the newest version of Vilvaldi. I tried to uninstall. Got a message saying An error occurred when uninstalling Vivaldi, maybe it is already uninstalled, would you like to remove the listing from programs and features. It is still functioning though. I really should figure out how to uninstall it and start all over again.

    Courgette

That is a decompression program used for Chromium browsers.

@nomenclator Looks like there was a online update (delta update) running trying to patch the changes and that failed.

What happens if you start Update manually by menu Help -> Check for Updates.
It that working or does it tell you you have the latest version?

  • I suppose I could try re-installing the latest version and see if it gets properly reinstalled, and see if it is possible to uninstall that. There are 2 folders in c:\programs, one for version 55, and one for version 60, missing the setup.exe program. I could try uninstalling using setup.exe with whatever switch is needed, but I'm afraid that might make things worse! Like perhaps make Vivaldi unusable, and make a mishmosh of my my registry. The other thing I could do is do a windows Restore to before I installed Vivaldi, about a week or 2 ago, but there have been 7 or 8 programs that I installed after Vivaldi, that I would have to reinstall.

@nomenclator Then all install was done with a ok!

No, apparently it was not. If Vivaldi was properly installed, then I would be able to uninstall it. But I cannot. Also, Windows programs and features cannot report Vivladi's size.

The 1.14.1077.60 folder is missing setup.exe in it. Also, the folder 1.14.1077.55 is till there, and it has setup.exe in it. The *.55 folder is supposed to be removed when version *.60 is installed. Conceivably even though update reports that I have version 1.14.1077.60, perhaps it is version 1.14.1077.55 that is actually running. Anyway I can't uninstall Vivaldi. I would like to be able to uninstall it! The lack of setup.exe in the *.60 folder is probably why I can't uninstall vivaldi.

Using Windows Restore to get back to where windows was before vivaldi was installed would require me to re-install 7 or 8 programs that I installed after installing Vivaldi.

No need to go back in time with restring backups!

    Change to Administrator account
Delete all found Vivaldi program(!) folders

    C:\Program Files\Vivaldi
    Start regedit.exe
    Delete all keys
    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Vivaldi
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Vivaldi

    Open https://vivaldi.com/download/
Download the installer for you architecture (32bit/64bit)

    Reinstall from downloaded installer

  • @gwen-dragon By "delete all keys" do you mean I should use regedit's find command to locate every thing in the registry that has the letters "vivaldi*" in it - I have found at least 40 so far, there are probably hundreds - or do you mean just delete the 2 things that you listed? In addition to "keys" the registry has "subkeys," "values," and "data." And I am not sure of the distinction between a value and data.

If I use the find command do I just check the box that says "keys" and not check the boxes that say "values" and "data" and then delete the 15 or so keys that it finds? Is that what I need to do? And what about the "match whole strings only" (whatever that means) checkbox? If I check that box in addition to the keys box it only finds about 8 things.

@nomenclator Delete the found Vivaldi trees in left pane.

  • @gwen-dragon Not sure what you mean. After I export a backup of the registry, I go to Edit > Find , and then in the prompt window that comes up, I enter "Vivaldi" in the text box, is that what I do? But then, which check boxes do I check? Then, after I click the Find Next button or hit F3, then the Find function will highlight things in the left pane. Do I then Right-Click on those highlighted things, and select Delete?
